Seriously guys is there something wrong?

Emily (5.5 months) is doing this new thing. She keeps widely whacking her right arm up and down real fast. I was just nursing her and she was whacking herself in the head. She doesn't do it constantly but a lot through out the day. She just started this a couple days ago and I'm kinda worried she has a neurological problem. What do you guys think, normal behavior or need to call the Dr.?

Re: Seriously guys is there something wrong?

There is nothing wrong (well I'm no doctor but...). Nikolas would do this and I was worried and ended up doing tons of research. Kate does the same thing.

I ended up giving it a name. I just saying it's them "getting their energy out".

After all that I read up on Nikolas it was nothing more than that basically-- energy exertion.

I have to swaddle Kate sometimes to get her to calm down enough to sleep but other than that she's fine to flail.

What it sounds like to me is that she's really figuring out how to swing her arms, and doesn't have enough control to stop yet. In other words, normal. BUT if your mama guts say she needs a check up, do it! It's not strange for babies to start some interesting nursing habits right now.

Yup. The ladies above are right. It's a new sensation and she's just learning how to manipulate her body. It's a GOOD thing! She's learning!!

Oh and Nikolas outgrew it at about 10-11 months if I remember correctly.

Re: Seriously guys is there something wrong?

My baby did the same exact thing. I second (or third? fourth?) that she just learned that she can move her arm and it is so! much! fun!

I would just help calm my DD down if she got too excited or riled up from the arm waving. Sometimes while nursing I would try to hold her arm down (if that didn't upset her) because she'd whack me with it and it got annoying.

It's a phase. Might last a week or two. Or maybe a few months.

my dd does this too. She is almost 10 months now but has been doing it for a while. And I notice her doing it while I'm nursing her. She often smacks me in the head
