How much milk is too much?

My son is almost 2 and he LOVES milk...all kinds...all day. I am trying to limit it because he is becoming a picky eater and I know the milk fills him up some too. Plus I can tell his poop is burny squishy when he has too much milk and not enough food. It actually burns his skin on bad days. I baby sit a boy who just turned one. His pediatrician said to cut back his milk to only 16oz a day. I know my son (at 2) drinks way more than that! OOPS! So please share, how much milk do you give your toddlers?

Re: How much milk is too much?

Everything I've read or been told has been no more than 16-24oz a day...24oz max. Too much milk can interfere with the ability to absorb iron and other nutrients...plus fill them up like you said

Re: How much milk is too much?

Mine has two cups a day and is still a picky eater... I do think it fills him up, but I try to feed him before I give him milk. It's hit or miss. He just isn't a big eater anyway...

My almost 2yo gets about 2oz of milk a week and about 4oz of cheese a week. I don't see a need to let them drink a bunch of milk, I'd rather they eat good food.

DS1 loved his milk - we would go through a gallon every 3-4 days at that age. I personally never worried about it too much, but I do know that you have to space out the times you drink milk - your body can't absorb that much calcium at one time.

I think 2 cups a day is the maximum at that age. Not positive of the amount, but here's the issue: too much calcium can inhibit iron absorption! But it's mostly milk itself, not milk products (I'm pretty sure); my ped said not to worry about cheese or yogurt. Makes sense -- they're digested differently enough to be recommended foods at younger ages.

Re: How much milk is too much?

I cut Tharen back to 24ounces recently. He is not happy with me. He drinks goat or hemp milk because he can't tolerate cows milk. But he wasn't eating much at all most days because he was drinking so much milk, he was always full from it. Plus goat and hemp milk is not cheap. I'm thinking of cutting him back even more in the hopes he starts eating more again. He used to eat anything you set in front of him, now he hardly eats at all.

Re: How much milk is too much?

My kids get about 8-12oz of milk a day. I'm probably a little overly concerned about them not drinking too much though because DSD had severe iron deficiency anemia when she was 2...she was being given about 48oz a day by her mom
