How can I identify this fabric? Hemp or Bamboo?

I just bought some French terry off a woman on my local Craigslist. She had purchased it several years ago along with a bunch of other diaper-making hemp and bamboo fabric and no longer needed it. Unfortunately, she couldn't remember if the French terry was hemp or bamboo. She got it from a coop and didn't know which store it had been purchased from either. Any idea how I can tell?

It comes in a tube, but I've googled hemp French terry and bamboo French terry and both can be purchased in tubes, so that doesn't help. I can't really tell by the feel. I know bamboo is softer, but I have nothing to compare to, so can't tell. The flat knit side is softer than other regular hemp I have, but the color looks exactly the same. Is there any other more objective test that could help me figure out what I have?

Finally, if I can't figure it out, what should I do with it? I was going to make inserts for my pocket trainers. Should I just use two or more layers of it since I'm not sure what it is? I have bamboo and help fleece also, but am not sure if I combining either with this unknown fabric in inserts would be a good idea.

Thoughts?

it can be either or. the knit of a french terry is identical no matter the type of fiber and both will get "hard" after several washings. the only way you can possibly tell is to smell it while its wet. hemp sometimes has a distinctive scent to it.

This fabric is perfect for inserts. I recommend at least 3 layers/insert for the best absorbency once you hit 4 layers your sewing machine will probably get a bit ornery.

Wet it and smell it. Hemp has a "smell" that is distinctive to hemp only.

Thanks for the suggestions about smelling it! I can't wait to do that as soon as I get home from work. I'm so curious. I got it for a good price, so figured whatever it was, it was worth it, but now I really do want to know.
