Vinegar..I <3 Vinegar

I had ammonia on my inserts for the first time AFTER a year of using them.. so I started soaking just my inserts..in white vinegar for about 5 minutes before my PRE-RINSE cycle..no more ammonia!!

AND sometimes using more soap helps just making sure to rinse the heck out of them..

Should I always use the vinegar now?

I soak all my inserts in vinegar and water now in a wet pail. It has worked great so far. So I say sure keep using the vinegar.

I add a cup of vinegar with detergent every time I wash diapers.

Re: Vinegar..I <3 Vinegar

Yes, you can use vinegar every time you wash. You can add 1/2 cup to your initial wash or rinse cycle (before the one with detergent). What vinegar does is neutralize any lingering ammonia salts. However, keep in mind that it does not do anything for the actual culprit--the bacteria. If your diapers are not getting clean, essentially all you are doing with vinegar is eliminate already existing ammonia, but you are not preventing new ammonia from forming. So it is important to use enough detergent in order to get the diapers nice and clean. An occasional dose of 1/2 cup of bleach in the main wash followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar in the final rinse is also a good idea (the vinegar will neutralize any remaining bleach and halt the deterioration of fabrics). Happy washing!

I add 1 c white vinegar to a hot soak for every load- I just pull out my PUL covers first. I let them soak for at least an hour! I don't think you have to wait this long, I just like to make sure they get nice and permeated by the vinegar. Then I spin the water out and do a regular wash, adding my PUL back in. It has been working wonders! Sometimes I'll add some detergent to the soak and that does make them smell more like detergent when they're done, but it's not always necessary.

I ADORE white vinegar - it is amazing, and for SOOOO many purposes. I think I might actually do my PF's in white vinegar tonight and put them through the drier, I've been line drying and they're all crunchy....

I have read that as well but I have super hard water and have been using vinegar for the last few washes and NO AMMONIA!!!
I had no idea that my mf inserts should not smell like ammonia...I just assumed that it was normal. It's been awesome changing her night time diaper and not having it smell in the am!!
