Foster Parent searching for cloth!

I have been a foster parent for almost two years now and I want to start using cloth. I am a teacher, so I thought the summer would be a perfect time to start.

I made a terrible purchase off of Facebook last week. I bought 12 used Cotton Babies pockets and they are almost all worthless. I guess the lining is bad and I know the elastic is shot. I have to change our little guy almost every hour!

I would love to try prefolds, but I would take absolutely anything for a good price. I don't have much money to spend, so I know that doesn't help. Husband saw how my last purchase turned out and doesn't think I should purchase used, but we can't afford anything new right now.

We only have one baby in the house right now (a boy), but we could get another call any day for a boy or a girl. We just had one baby reunified with his family two weeks ago!

Thanks you!

How old/what size is your baby? Wondering what size you are looking for.

Wow that blog post is awesome! I almost want to switch to sposies so I can convert back in 6 months

But this reminds me - by my math, we broke even on our cloth diapers this week. I got a bit carried away and got a bigger stash than I first planned, so it took us 9.5 mos to break even with what I calculate our sposies cost would have been. But every day from here on out is just saving money

Point is - it is a large chunk to shell out all at once, but that blog post has an awesome plan for getting it done, and you can do well buying on sale or used. Once you've broke even, it's all saving from there! Any diapers I've bought new were earth day or black Friday sales. I did get some used ones that I wasn't happy with as well, but I've also got excellent deals on used ones here or on eBay. If you can take your time shopping and aren't trying to switch to cloth overnight, you can work it into your budget nicely! Good luck!

Re: Foster Parent searching for cloth!

That blog post has some really good ideas for building gradually (but quickly). And if you are looking to do prefolds and covers exclusively, that would be even faster, because they don't cost as much as the pockets and you get so many more at a time.

I have bought prefolds and covers new, but all of our other diapers I have also bought here or on eBay, and most have been really good. Don't let one bad experience scare you off...but it is good to buy with some purchase protection (through eBay or PayPal) so the seller has some accountability.

Re: Foster Parent searching for cloth!

I have 9 Babykicks pockets that I was going to post. They are lightly used (2-3 times a week for about 3 months) and all gender neutral. Take a look at them on their website and PMt me if you are interested! I would do $35 ppd for all 9 .

Re: Foster Parent searching for cloth!

Prefolds and covers are definitely a good way to get started.
