Inspiration for those selling their house...

So many of you are preparing to sell. Four years ago I had to purge/minimize/stage our home to sell with three kids under six, and I remember how hard that was. Our realtor used a professional photographer for all her listings, and you can see all the work we did in those pics. The house had multiple offers in a week and sold for full market value right away. I have posted these pics in the thrifty forum before, but it's been a while. Looking back now these pics are better for the minimalist forum, LOL.

Please note the following suggestions:
* Don't forget the outside, particularly where they walk up to the house. Notice there is no kids toys and junk out there. The flowerbeds by the door were redone. We repainted the door and the siding only at the entryway, put up new house numbers and a new mailbox, etc. because buyers hang out there while the realtor opens the door.
* Notice the whole house is a neutral color. Ideally it should have been a little lighter, but I got a great deal on 5 gallon buckets of oops paint. White curtains. NO pictures or anything on the walls or other decor. Staging shows would lead you to believe you need art and trinkets. That only detracts from the house itself and people judge your decorating choices instead.
* Notice the lack of kids' stuff. There are no toys in the main areas at all. Only a few in the bedrooms. We got rid of the third kids' bed and slid a mattress under the daybed to make the rooms look bigger.
* Disregard the container garden in the backyard. Ideally that should have been gone. That was one area I couldn't budge on, we had worked too hard on that. The only reason the swingset and sandbox remained is because 70% of the potential buyers for our market had kids.

Here is the slideshow for the listing:

Re: Inspiration for those selling their house...

I want to pretend to sell my home so it looks like that. Actually, we are looking, but VERY particular, so we may wait a year or more for something to come up. We need to be able to put our house on the market within a couple of weeks' notice. We have been working to minimize, and continue to work on projects. I think it'd probably take 1 month currently, but we're definitely getting closer. Thanks for the inspiration!

Re: Inspiration for those selling their house...

I think I remember seeing this in the thrifty forum before. It really does look nice. I'm amazed that you were living there with kiddos at the time... that couldn't have been easy. But what I love about minimalist homes is that less is so much more. The spaces are very well defined. So, minimalist homes just look like professionally staged homes? Interesting because everyone always looks at those perfect homes and says they want to live there... and if you're a minimalist you do get to!
