Re: Anyone else have a bigger family but a small house?

We aren't in that big of a house either. We have 3 bedrooms, and right now it is oldest DD in a room and the boys in a room. The baby rooms with us for now. I hear all the time about how we need more space, but honestly I don't want to move. I like being settled. I just need to get rid of more stuff.

Hehe we have three girls and our home is 420 square feet! Ttc#4 we live on 160 acres, we only really have one bedroom. We live totally off grid, have an outhouse, why were down right crazy to most people! But guess what our bills are 400$ a month! Just cell phone, rent200$ and my insurance(hubby paid his for a full year) I couldn't care less what people think of me, that's none of my buisness!

Re: Anyone else have a bigger family but a small house?

We are having this debate right now. DH grew up in a very materialistic family that didn't have anything to speak of (if that makes sense). Most of his siblings (he has 7) are materialistic as well and most are not well-off or even close to it. I didn't grown up this way. Materialism was very minimal and bills were paid on time with no cc debt.

We constantly have this "discussion" and the first house that we bought I was influenced by his belief and I suffered for almost 3 years (wondering if and when we could pay our bills) because of it. Now we are renting an apt. after selling our house and moving across the country. We are looking to buy a house/condo/townhome again and I told him that I will not sign the papers to buy the house (my credit score is better than his) if I am not comfortable with the amount that we buy the house for.

I too believe that more is less in many ways. House payments and time spent cleaning are extremely important to me. Let's hope that DH is on board this time.

I totally agree. The more kids we have, the more everyone says we need a bigger house. I am absolutely against it. . We purchased an average 3/2 home and I will live in it until I die :-)

We live in a small house with baby #5 on the way, too! We do have a basement with a play area, but otherwise we have 3 bedrooms and only 1 bathroom. Sometimes it feels crowded, but usually we do just fine. Might be harder once the kids are older and bigger though, but now since our oldest is only 8, it works just fine.

Re: Anyone else have a bigger family but a small house?

We have lived for the past year in a 3/2 house with my FIL living in the boys' room while all 4 of my children slept in the girls' room. My FIL will be moving out soon, so the boys can have their room back, but we will still have 3 in one room (due in a few days with #5.)

I know another family that is pregnant with #9 and they live in a 4/1 house, and one of those rooms is a playroom.

It really depends on how much stuff you have. This other family and our family are both minimalists, so we have more room for people. I know another family that has more things, and so they would have a harder time fitting into a smaller home. My thoughts are less stuff and space means less cleaning!

Re: Anyone else have a bigger family but a small house?

When we moved here, we decided our priority would be land, so we bought a small house on 10 acres. Our house is about 1000 square ft. We converted the attached garage into a real room, so now my husband and I share the room with the washer, drier and deep freezer, lol. The oldest girls share the biggest actual bedroom and the younger two share the smaller bedroom. There is a tiny room that is supposed to be a bedroom, but it couldn't fit more than a twin bed and a small dresser, so we use it as a computer/book space, and also brood chicks in there occasionally.

We own our home outright, and our goal is to build an expansion onto this house in a few years.

For now it's snug, but comfortable. The kids have a lot of toys and books, but I try not to keep too much stuff. The house is for living in, not for storing stuff.
SAHM to 4 girls ages 10, 8, 4, and 2.
