1 or 2 bathrooms?

We are moving into a 520 sq ft condo with an unfinished attic about 200 sq ft. I'm going to finish it, and debating whether or not to add a bathroom (or half-bath) in there. Everyone says I should because a second bathroom is a necessity.

I'm hesitant. We (myself and 2 daughters) have always lived in apartments with two bathrooms and the second bathroom was hardly ever used.

We're in a community so there's always a second common bathroom we can run to within a minute if needed.

I dislike cleaning bathrooms.

My four siblings and I shared one bathroom growing up and we did not find that difficult.

Am I going to regret not adding one?

2 bathrooms are good for resale. So if this isnt your forever home then Id say yes add it. But if you know you are fine running on 1 bathroom then I wouldnt worry about it.

I would personally add a half bath upstairs if it won't eat into your space too much. I wouldn't say it's a necessity.... but it sure is nice when someone is sick.

Or when you have a couple of toddlers going through potty training at the same time....

As a large family, we'd have to be pretty destitute to go back to a single bathroom home--but when we were in a single bathroom home we didn't have a community bathroom or anything either.

That's an issue too... a half-bath would eat up space that's already small.

We are a family of 3 now, will possibly have a fourth person/third child when the younger one is past toddlerhood.

I don't remember fighting for the bathroom with my 4 siblings even when 3 of us had to make the 7am school bus every morning in high school.

Although there was a second bathroom in our parents' room for emergencies. Wasn't used by us kids much though.

Yeah, we were a family of nine with a single bathroom. Most mornings there was a line to get in. And no second bathroom/community bathroom for emergencies.

Do whatever you think is best for your situation, but I think a half bath would be great. I know you said you don't like cleaning it but give that job to the kids!

I would add a half for resale value. It does come in handy if something is wrong with the first.

I looked at a house with one bathroom for seven of us. We would have made it work.

Meh, ID skip it without question. We are a family of 8 with one bathroom. Plenty of space upstairs of we felt like adding another bathroom, but it isn't necessary at all.
