HMBANA is a network of non-profit human milk banks that serve many areas of the US. I donated to the Mother's Milk Bank of North Texas- over a thousand ounces!

Re: Do you have extra breastmilk?

I donate to Prolacta. I know that they are a for-profit company, however... I can also tell you that the qualification process to become a donor for them is INTENSE. I had to have bloodwork and doctors releases, and a DNA profile... they even tested my freezer to make sure it kept my milk cold enough!

They also re-qualify donors every 3 months. Prolacta is regulated by the FDA, whereas non-profit milk banks are not, and Prolacta also takes a small portion of the milk it receives to perform ongoing research into the benefits of breastmilk.

In short- if you can donate, that is awesome- regardless of how you go about it... but I don't feel that Prolacta is "capitalizing" on defenseless and ill babies. I feel that they are providing a service.

Here are some FAQs for anyone that desires to read them...

Just read the lactivist link listed about the prices that they charge. Now I am not sure how I feel about them. I do know that they have been in operation since 1999 and have made less than 1 million dollars total in that amount of time. If anyone has any more info about this, I would be interested in hearing about it. The research they perform and the scientific aspect of what they do appealed to me, but now I am second guessing myself.

Re: Do you have extra breastmilk?

I have a freezer full and have thought about donation. I do take some medications daily, so I think it limits my options to donate. Everything I take was cleared by my children's pedi from the get-go, but some places don't allow any medications.

I have several hundred ounces in deep freeze already and he is only 3 months old!

Re: Do you have extra breastmilk?

I had a ton of milk left over after pumping for my premie for 5 months. Now that she is breastfeeding directly I just don't have the time to pump! I donated the extra milk (over 1000 oz!) to the closest milkbank. I contacted the local lactation specialist and asked her for local banks.
