The stink just keeps coming back...HELP!

I've been battling the stink for a time. I have bleached the diapers (twice), all was well for a month or so and the stink returned so I finally stripped them (thus far I've been following fluff love universities recommendations for bleach soak and strip). They were good for a little longer and the stink is now back. It has to be my wash routine, right?? If it was a good wash routine they wouldn't keep stinking!! I had been using a plant based detergent (seventh generation ultra power plus) but after 2 go rounds w/ bleach and a strip, I finally gave in and am now using tide. I have an HE top loader w/ out the agitation thingy in the middle. I do what my washer calls a "cotton/normal" cycle on cold, choosing heavy for soil level w/ tide filled to line 2 for the first wash to get rid of any extra poo. For the main wash, I wash on hot, "heavy duty" and add in a soak, and fill tide to line 4. I add whatever towels I have on the main wash to try to get at least half way full. I've messed w/ load size, as I mentioned different detergents. I am at a loss here! Also it isn't an ammonia, burn your nose hairs smell it just is stinky after she has peed in them...like I'm not sure I want someone to hold her because they might smell her diaper kind of smell lol

Do you know if you have hard water? We have hard water, so I add a capful of calgon to both washes. Otherwise I do everything you do.

Also, are your diapers microfiber? I haven't experienced this, but I have *heard* that microfiber just goes bad after a while and needs tossed. It's pretty cheap to replace. I'm on my second child with my microfiber and it still smells good, though.

If you have an HE machine, you may just be using too much detergent. That seems like a lot of detergent to me.

Or your baby may just have concentrated pee...my daughter's diapers smell pretty strong after a pee right now too. Not ammonia, just a strong pee smell. Not very pleasant, but I don't think it's the wash routine's fault. Although I could be wrong about that.

I don't have hard water. It is funny you mention the microfiber thing. I was talking to someone today who told me that. I'm honestly starting to wonder if it isn't true! Although you have had luck it seems, so I don't know!

Re: The stink just keeps coming back...HELP!

What kinda of diapers are you using? To determine if you are using too much detergent for your diapers/washer/water type I would bleach/"strip"/several hot wash cycles w/o detergent to get them to a very clean/soap free state. Do your normal routine completely. Then do a final, preferably warm rinse that you stay for and check for soap bubbles (not agitation bubbles). If it has a clear top you can just look in, otherwise you will have to stop it when its in the agitate phase and open and check (I say don't leave cause like all mama's you will likely miss it)

The amt "to use" depends on the detergent instructions and size of load. I would start with the amt the instructions say. EG if the detergent say for an HE machine to fill to line 2 for the size load then do that. Often times diaper loads are about half the washer or less though so, so you have to half or even less than half what the detergent says to do for a full HE load. Diapers can get clean on a surprisingly small amt of detergent, it's whats appropriate for the wash.

I use about half a cup (I think--it's half a scoop anyway) of my grocery store's generic natural liquid detergent. Warm soak (1/2 hour or so), prewash without detergent, hot heavy cycle with detergent, then tumble dry low.

Have you been able to resolve your stink issues?
