Re: Diaper Sprayer... Necessary or no?

Definitely not a necessity. For my first, I used a peri bottle to rinse the diaper (peri bottles are a bit small, I would choose some other squirt bottle if you have one around the house - dishsoap bottle maybe or a sports water bottle). For my second, I do a lot of shaking off and saying, "Eh, that's good enough." But the peri bottle is still there (never got around to replacing it with a bigger bottle) and once in awhile I do reach for it if the diaper is really messy.

Really, the only reason you need to get the poo off is for the undigested fibrous material that comes through - things like grape peels, bits of orange, broccoli stems, and so on, because those can't go down the drain in the washing machine. There are other reasons you might want to get the poo off (like staining, smell, the way you store diapers, etc etc etc) but the only necessity is cleaning off those large pieces, and that's easy enough to do with a swish in the toilet.

It's nice, but not a necessity, as others have said. You can also dunk and swish, or get a spatula that's reserved for cleaning (this is for more solid, dry ones). Liners do help when they're more solid. I will say that the sprayer has been nice for cleaning out the training toilet as well. I'd say try it without it, you can always buy one later if you want. I didn't get one until my son started solids.

Thank you all for the great input! I'm thinking I may add one to my registry and if I get it, great, if not we'll give it a go without!

I had to reiterate the "eh, that's good enough" because I completely agree!! I find myself saying that all the time with my second!! ha, love!

I do not think the sprayer is necessary. Once baby is on solids, especially toddler BMs, you definitely need to remove the majority of the BM, but I just do this with a wad of toilet paper, figuring you've already got dirty hands from changing the diaper in the first place. I wash my hands well after, of course! I could see sprayers being really useful, and even have one we've never hooked up, but I was a little concerned about the back-splash from the spray and just started using the TP instead. It makes you really happy for the BMs that are perfectly intact that just roll into the toilet, ha!

I have used disposable diaper liners when we camp, or when we are dealing with a bout of diarrhea. I do not want the expense and hassle of using them regularly, but think they can be really useful at times.

The lil helpers made in canada make great liners that the poo just rolls off once past breastmilk stage

Re: Diaper Sprayer... Necessary or no?

I assumed it was a "luxury" thing. But our LO has always had firmer poops. So they either flop right in, or they're this paste that swishing/dunking/shaking isn't going to dislodge. I'd be getting my hand in the bowl, and after I got splashed in the face with poopy water I went "Nope. I'm getting a sprayer." I got a bidet styled sprayer, so it can serve dual purpose.
So happy, for those stuck on ones, some strategic angling is required, but I can almost always gurantee when the diaper goes in the "to wash" bucket, it's white on the inside.
It's nice to know that min. amount of poo is going into the washer.

Re: Diaper Sprayer... Necessary or no?

We swish in the toilet once baby starts solids. On kiddo #5 & no sprayer. Not necessary- although I know some love them.

Good stuff! For those of you swishing in the toilet, do you use tongs or just your hand?

Just my hands, though I did have dedicated diaper duty gloves for a while there.

I use tongs for both swishing and diaper spraying.
