In Indiana a child must start school by age 7 and can start in 1st grade.

In most states, compulsory attendence laws don't kick in until age 6 or 7. I believe there are a few states that have attendence laws at 5yo but not very many.

To the original poster, I read your other thread and my first thought was that child needs to come home but I figured my opinion was a little biased. Your plan sounds like a good one but don't be afraid to pull her out sooner if things escalate. Also make sure you and your dh realize that if you pull her out after Christmas break, she'll need time to decompress and she may not show any forward progress for several months after you pull her out especially if she's having a bad experience with school right now.

Anywho, good luck and I hope you find something that works out for your dd.

Jeni

Kindergarten:

"review of compulsory attendance laws across the nation shows that requiring young children to attend school may be largely unnecessary. Only nine states require attendance of 5 year olds, and seven of those nine allow exemptions for parents to withhold their children from school until age 6. The other 41 states allow parents to wait until their children are 6, 7, or even 8 years old before beginning formal education"

Re: Thinking about starting again..

After teaching in a public school for 2 years, I've decided that I'll probably homeschool my kids. I can't say for sure that's what I'll do, but I cannot take the moral wasteland that is the public school system. You wouldn't believe how behind some of my high school students are. Your administration will probably never support your decision to hs. Most really feel that ps is the way to go. Yeah, right.
