Carseat in middle or outboard position?

I live in NYC (don't have a car) and put my doona stroller/car seat into lots of cabs. I know if you own a car, you install your car seat and base into one of the LATCH positions (usually outboard positions of 2nd row, center position in 3rd row). Are the LATCH positions the safest positions in the car to install the seat, even if you aren't using the LATCH system?

Not necessarily. The safest position is the position where the seat installs the best, no matter which method you use-LATCH or seatbelt.

Re: Carseat in middle or outboard position?

But assuming a perfect install in all seats, I think the middle is the safest option.

Re: Carseat in middle or outboard position?

Assuming perfect install, LATCH is not safer nor less safe than seat belt (but watch weight limits, especially in an unfamiliar car).

The safest spot is the spot farthest from the impact in a crash. If you get hit on the drivers' side, passenger side is safest. If you get hit on passenger side, drivers' side is safest. Back seat always. Since we can't predict where an impact would be, as long as the install is good, the center seat puts baby as far from both passenger side and drivers' side impacts as possible.

One other consideration might be to think of who else is riding with baby in the cab, and if the available seats all have lap/shoulder belts (vs. lap only belts) and head rests. Sometimes the center seat makes most sense for carseats simply due to it not being safe (lap belt only, no head rest) for adults.

If you can put the seat in the middle.

Re: Carseat in middle or outboard position?

For some reason I've always put my littles on the opposite side to where I sit. Since I'm the main driver, that means they're on the passenger side. I've never been able to have one fit correctly in the center, though I wish I could! I was t-boned late last year and my car was totaled. The woman hit my door, sent us about 400 feet down a side street.
My son was on the opposite side thank God, and had zero injuries.
