Potty training a 29 month old with speech delay

I'm not sure how related these two things are but I would really like to potty train DS1 but am afraid given that he has such a significant speech delay and isn't able to verbalize much to us.

His receptive language is off the charts and he does understand and try to say yes or no when I ask him if he has gone pee or poop.

I'm just wondering if I should wait until he has been in speech for a few more months and doing better or if that even makes a difference as long as he is cognizant of what his potty is doing.

Any advice? Any other mamas try this if their LO wasn't speaking yet?

I have no idea but I think you should ask his speech therapist. They might even have some resources for you like visuals, pics, charts. Plus they probably see many children in the same situation so they might have some advice.

its doable. the autistic boy i nannied would go potty before he talked nut never initiated anything. id offer every 2 hours or so, just take him to the potty. if he goes, great. if he resists dont push too hard.

I am a speech pathologist, and while I can't say for sure without meeting your little guy, if his receptive language is right on track, and his only difficulty is being able to verbalize the need to go, you should still be able to start potty training if he seems ready otherwise. Maybe you could teach him the sign for 'potty' so he can sign when he has to go.
Or, if he struggles with specific speech sounds, and can't actually say "potty" maybe he can come up with a word that means 'potty' that he can use to tell you he has to go.
If his receptive langauge is age appropriate, he'll understand praise when he does it right, and he'll begin to understand the routine of going to the potty when he has to go- lots of praise and consistency!
Good luck!

My DS isn't speaking yet either and we're still potty training. He's a little younger than yours, but sounds about the same. His receptive speech is excellent and he tries to communicate he just isn't quite there yet. But he's doing well- he has figured out other ways already of telling us he has to go or that he already has went... You should be able to still potty train.
