Baby pulling off while nursing
DD is almost 5 months old and the past couple days she keeps pulling off the breast while nursing. She was doing this a little before usually when she was really tired but would settle down and nurse fine. Now she is nursing for a minute or two and then she pulls off, wants to keep nursing, pulls off...over and over (she isn't really fussy when I try to nurse only gets mad because she wants to eat). It is getting frustrating for me and her. I know she is getting some milk because she will sometimes spit up after nursing. I do have some pumped milk to give her so I know she is eating enough, but I prefer to just nurse. She did seem to have a cold starting Friday night but she seems to be doing better, just some boogies in her nose. Also she may be teething...
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Last edited by rickysgirl25; 06-08-2010 at 10:33 PM. |

Re: Baby pulling off while nursing
I don't know if it helps much, by my DD did this a lot when she started teething. I found that giving her a teething tablet before nursing helped a lot. Good luck to you!

Re: Baby pulling off while nursing
Sounds like teething. It could also be that she's still a bit stuffed up from her cold and needs to pop off to get air.

Re: Baby pulling off while nursing
Could be teething or that she needs to pee- my daughter sometimes does that if she needs to pee. But, if she didn't usually do that it could be teething also. Claire doesn't pull off when teething, she just whines with the boob in her mouth, haha.

Re: Baby pulling off while nursing
DD did a lot of popping on and off at that age too. Like a PP said, sometimes it was because she needed to go potty. But I think teething had something to do with it. If it gets really frustrating, you could try another activity for a while, then try nursing again. Or try nursing in a quiet place, maybe lying down, so she can be more focused. HTH!

Re: Baby pulling off while nursing
My son is almost 5 months and does the exact same thing and it doesnt help that his brother is so amusing to him and calls for his attention what the reall kicker is he is starting to bite down and turn away luckily no teeth yet, so i hope this phase hurries up and fizzles out
