Going swimming with toddler and newborn

How do I do it? Yesterday we went with my MIL so she played in the water with dd and I sat on the side with ds but dd had so much fun that I want to make the swimming pool a big part of our summer. (MIL lives out of state.)

Would it work to put ds in a front carrier and stand in the wading pool? Any ideas?

I got an H2Duo from a WAHM here on diaperswappers (forgetting her username... I think it's Michiko) and wear my dd in front and then make sure my toddler has swimmies on and keep her within arms reach in case she needs me. The carrier frees up my arms to help ODD while still letting me and YDD swim too. HTH!

Re: Going swimming with toddler and newborn

My kids are almost the exact same age as yours (DD1 - 5/07, DD2 - 5/10) and I'm wondering the same thing. I'm thinking having the baby in a carrier would work pretty well, but my DD isn't always happy in the wading pool anymore. I guess she just won't have much choice this year . I'm also concerned about the baby gets too much sun. I hate to put sunscreen on a baby so tiny. What have you done about that?

For sunscreen, I'm thinking I'll just put him in a long sleeved white t-shirt and his hat. Then I'll jerry rig some sort of blanket cover over the front carrier to cover his legs. I don't want to use sunscreen on him yet. (And I think the baby sunscreens say not to until 6 months?)

We have an in-ground pool at our house. DS is 3, and goes all over the pool with his water wings. DD is about 3 months, and I just hold her while I go in the water. I put SPF 50 on her Or, I sit at the edge of the pool in the shade with her.

We have something like this for DS http://www.alexandme.com/SnapperRock.../swi-bb-sr.htm Ours is great because it fits from 0-24 months. You can find longer sleeves and legs too if you look. They are great for the little ones and toddlers because you can cover so much skin without them being hot or needing sunblock.

Re: Going swimming with toddler and newborn

i got a water sling - they make them with solarveil material. That's what I used when DD was an infant. I would also put the toddler in a life jacket (or similar flotation device). I've done it before, but usually at the lake, and limit where the older kids can go (so that the baby is in the sling, but we are not truly wet, if that makes sense).

I found a great mesh wrap on Etsy. I may look into something like that (as if I need more baby wearing apparel).

While I do not have a newborn, I hold dd and ds wears his floaties (if at a friends house) or a vest (if at the ymca) and i just keep him next to me
