Re: Pediatrician criticized me for nursing *their response letter*

mamas, i just wanted to send out a HUGE thank you to all of you who have responded and supported me through this. even though i know she was wrong in what she said, it still REALLY hurts to have a medical professional so openly criticize your decisions, and say that they will be detrimental to his health

each and every response means so much to me. now that i'm on spring break (WAHOOOOO!) i'm going to hit this issue very hard, and i want to have all of my information gathered, my letter written, and in the mail before my classes start back up. i'll post my letter as soon as i have it finished, and i'll ask for critiques then. thanks so much!!

(and a'smommy, thanks for the congrats!)

Wow!! I'm so sorry you had to go through all this!! My ped has never openly criticized me for breastfeeding, but he has admitted to a friend of mine that it grosses him out and asked her several times when she was going to stop?!!!

My daughter had openheart surgery at 15 months. When I told him I would definately continue nursing until after she was recovered from surgery he was openly shocked.

Even the specialists in the CICU where she had her surgery weren't educated enough to realize that breastmilk is a clear liquid. They didn't let me give her bm till after a certain period and even then didn't let me nurse her for several days. I was not happy!! All I wanted to do was comfort my baby in the most basic way!!

Fat Content of Breast Milk Increases with Time

They say they aren't sure what the effects on a child's health are from such high energy and fat content. Ya know what? I firmly believe that our bodies are making exactly what our babies need, at every stage. There's a reason there's a higher fat and energy content past one year. It's because our babies need that, I'm guessing for brain development and increased activity. You should feel good and be proud that you are still giving your son EXACTLY what he needs!
This is a bit of a highjack, but I've always wondered how that works when someone's nursing a newborn and a 2yo? Who's needs win out??? I'm guessing the the milk is geared toward the newborn?
Just curious!

I just read this and just wanted to give you a and say good for you for standing up for you and your child. Maybe this doctor will think before he spouts his misinformation to the next mom.

I'm just reading this thread now and their letter makes it that much WORSE. I'm so sorry your drs are so very ignorant and arrogant. Kudos to you for sticking to your guns and standing up to them since you are obviously more informed than they are!

We're behind you mama! I hadn't posted on this yet, just been watching. I've found anything worth something means us taking a stand as parents. There are many issues my parents don't agree with as far as what we do with our children, but we just stand firm. Good going mama!

Re: Pediatrician criticized me for nursing *their response letter*

I did not read all the posts, but the ones I have, everyone has great points.... And yes, "Hello?" The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends at least the first 2 years of breastfeeding.... Sounds like this doc is way behind and doesn't know her stuff.... And I would personally not EVER go back to her, and find a new ped. I agree with the last comment, if this is her stance on breastfeeding, I couldn't trust anything else she consulted on either.

Further more, this makes me even more mad, because my DS has allergies to dairy proteins and soy, and I have done extension research on giving babies cow's milk, etc. And there are SO many disadvantages to introducing dairy too soon (kidney's can not process it, possible neurological problems later, etc.) Your Ped should be PRAISING you, not criticizing you for giving your baby the BEST possible nutrition!

Re: Pediatrician criticized me for nursing *their response letter*

Wow! I'm just seeing this for the first time, and while I shouldn't be surprised, I am still pretty speechless. It makes me feel much happier about my decision to leave our ped's office for a family practice doctor who is into osteopathic medicine.

Anyway, mama I don't really have any advice because it seems like you're doing an excellent job handling this. I just wanted to offer some support and encourage you to continue pursuing this until their response is satisfactory...it's unacceptable for teh doctor to have said this to you in the 1st place and then to twist it around like you asked about the benefits of bf'ing is just insane!

As a mama who got the crappy advice to supplement because my milk wasn't in at 4 days postpartum and spent 2 months busting my butt to get ds off of formula, I'm so glad you're continuing to fight them on this! So many women get this bad advice and assume that the doctor is telling them the truth.

Way to go mama! Don't let them off the hook!

Re: Pediatrician criticized me for nursing *their response letter*

The ped my twins saw at around 13 months complimented me on still nursing them. She said it was great especially since so many illnesses were going around.

The fam doctor I took them to for their 12 mo appt actually couldn't believe I had enough milk to nurse the both of them. Shows how much he knows. As soon as he asked me that question I knew I needed to take them somewhere else.
