When did you let your child have nut products?

We have NO history of nut allergies in our family. Our ped wants us to wait till 2 to give our son any nuts. However this seems way long to us (even though it is only in a few months now).

So when did you let your child have nut products?

Both of my girls started getting PB sandwiches around 10 to 12 months. No history of allergies here either. I know that is way earlier than 2, but I guess we live in the wild side. We introduced strawberries before 12 mos and also seafood before 2.

We waited until one year for nuts/peanuts. We also have no family history and I've never seen any conclusive research that says delaying exposure helps prevent an allergy, and I've seen some research that actually indicates the opposite may be true.

FYI, kids can develop nut allergies months after they are initially exposed. you must eat peanuts to develop antibodies to peanuts in the first place. I had no idea until my daughter developed a peanut allergy after eating peanuts for a whole year. She started eating nuts around 18months, and developed a full blown reaction 33 months. We had no peanut allergy in our family. she also tested for treenut allergies and was not as severe. it's really sad because my daughter is old enough to remember what nuts taste like (used to be her favorite thing) and still asks for them.

Re: When did you let your child have nut products?

I thought our ped was being overly cautious. They are tied to a major children's hospital (first children's hospital in the country) so I guess they see nut allergies a lot. However we are having nuts in our meal tonight and last night DS was begging for pecans (which we had on our salad).

I don't want my son to be allergic to them, but I don't want to deprive him of something either. KWIM?

we have no family history of any food allergies at all, so i didnt hold anything back like that. he had peanut butter before 1 year old and hes 15 months now and he loves to snack on peanuts. if we had any family history i probably would have waited longer.
