Which spelling is more phonetic?

I love unique names, but I want people to know how to pronounce them-- I realize there will always be *some* mispronunciation (our last name is a very common "Mac" name, and even it gets mispronounced) but I'd like to keep it to a minimum.

If this baby is a boy, I think we've decided his name will be Koa. It's an obvious pronunciation to me, but is it obvious to everyone else? Or should I stick an "h" on the end so people will know it sounds like Noah? Koa is a type of wood (spelled with no "h") so just plain K-O-A looks right to me, but I'm concerned that people will see it and think "KOE". What do you think?

Re: Which spelling is more phonetic?

We know a Koa and that is how his name is spelled, so it looks right to me!

Looks like it would be pronounced "Koah" to me.

I like it without the h. I read Koa like Noah too, even without the h.

I'll be the first to admit, I've never heard the name before and without the h, I was trying to figure out how it should be pronounced. Now that I know, it's obvious, but before you said it was like Noah, I was a bit perplexed.

Re: Which spelling is more phonetic?

Adding the h makes it more obvious, but I read it correctly even without it. I've never heard that name before, I like it.

OMG, Koa is our leading boy name too. I'm trying to stay with tree names since my DD is Sequoia. My DH was raised on Maui and I was born on Oahu so the name seems obvious to us. The only problem I see is that mainlanders wIll think about those KOA campgrounds. Don't put an h on the end because then you'll just be misspelling it.

You know what's so funny, we recently moved to Portland and I just recently drove by a KOA campground after I fell in love with the name! I didn't realize it was a Hawaiian name either, I just knew it was a tree, and my husband has a guitar made of Koa. (the tree must grow in Hawaii?)

I do hate to misspell it, but I'd also hate for nobody to be able to pronounce my son's name! Of course, this whole conversation will be null and void if my mama-instinct is right and this is a girl.
