Fixing latch

I noticed that my 5 week old is not latched correctly. I think the thrush is to blame (he has it on his tongue). His lips are almost always inverted. I have tried using my index finger to fix the bottom lip while nursing but it doesn't seem to work. I know getting a really wide mouth with the tongue out is key to getting a good latch, but I can't seem to get him to open up. I try again and again to get the wide mouth before I bring him in but he eventually gets so upset that I just go ahead and feed him.
I'm not having pain from feeding, just thrush and he is gaining weight very well, but I still want to fix it. What can I do?
