UPDATE 9/13 - U/S today. Scared & wondering if anyone has had a similar experience??

We had an u/s with this pregnancy at like 21 weeks and the baby's brain measurements were "off" we were referred to a perinatologist at maternal fetal medicine... they confirmed that in fact the ventricles in the brain were measuring large. They gave us tons of info and ultimately we had a follow up four weeks later where miraculously everything measured RIGHT ON. So sometimes they do get measurements that correct themselves. The wait is definitely hard and it's easier said than done but try not to get too worried or worked up because there is nothing you can do right now. Hang in there mama!!

Yes, I totally agree, but it sounds like they totally left her hanging without even the slightest clue what they were concerned about. Being told "the brain and heart didn't look the way they should" is completely vague, and any US tech or MD should be able to sit there and show on the screen what it is they're worried about, what isn't looking right to them. Is something big? Small? Dilated? Constricted? Hyperechogenic? Hypoechogenic? Fluid where there should be no fluid? Disorganized tissue where there should be organized tissue? Are they seeing "markers" that would indicate an increased risk of certain diseases?

I definitely wouldn't expect them to necessarily nail down a diagnosis based on an initial US exam, and I definitely think a specialist and a repeat exam are the best way to go. I know I would hate to be totally left in the dark like this, and I just hate that this poor mama is just left hanging- the only real saving grace is that they're getting her in quickly to be checked so she won't have to sit and agonize over the unknown possibilities for days on end! Hopefully this recheck exam will give *information* whether good or bad, so that steps can be taken, and the poor mama can be fully informed and get educated on the situation.

I don't mean to be overly sensitive, I have just been left hanging by too many MD's regarding my own health, and being a Doctor myself (of a different type entirely- veterinary medicine, where we not only deal with an animal but their owner/family's emotions as well), I have found that it is unnecessary to leave people hanging blind like this in most situations. All you have to do is give the information you have at hand and explain why you have decided it is necessary to go further, explain your concerns and the risks, and possibly the chances that it is a serious concern vs just checking to be sure everything is ok... In the vast majority of my experiences with MDs, they just don't communicate enough and in a lot of situations it leads to undue stress. I'm not saying everything is peachy, for sure, just that it would have been nice if her MD had given her some clue as to what they were concerned about...

Hugs!!!!!! let us know!!! hopefully they are concerned for nothing!!! i had a "huge fibroid" on my 9 week scan, and had another today at 12w5d and it was gone... they're not always right. XO

Sazbaby, that is exactly why I've been so upset. She was so grim about the whole thing, but she couldn't tell us specifically what she "suspected". Like, is it life-threatening or not? DH and I already decided long ago that if we had a baby with special needs, that we'd gladly take on that challenge, and we still feel the same, so if I knew that it was something the baby could live with, I'd feel much better, it just this not knowing that's killing me.

My OB is out for the week, so my family doctor called and I'm seeing another doctor in that practice. I doubt he'd call and get me in so soon if it was just to tell me the same thing she already told me at the u/s.. so I'm expecting some answers. Preparing for the worst, but hoping for the best. Tomorrow is DH's birthday, too - good news would be a fantastic present!
