Australia?
Hi! We have a 75% chance of going to Alice Springs early 2013. There aren't a lot of military there so it's hard to find people that know anything about it. I've known some people that have been there, but that was years ago.
I'm really excited- people have told me it's a great place to raise kids- especially boys ![]() Any words of advice?

Re: Australia?
I was born in Australia and we moved to the US when I was little. My dad is Australian and my mom American. We travel back frequently every year. I think it would be an amazing place to live. I will say that I've had some issues w/ people not liking americans and tourists but all it all it's great. I've never been to Alice; we're from Queensland and the coast. From what I've heard Alice is pretty far from a lot of things, but that is just hearsay. If I had the option of moving to Australia I think we would!

Re: Australia?
thanks. We encountered a strong dislike of Americans when we lived in Northern England. Despite that, we found British people to hang out with and really enjoyed our time there...we sort of went native
The only thing that worries me a bit is someone we knew that lived there said he paid $11 a pound for bananas! We would have to change our eating habits big time since we eat a lot of fresh produce.

Re: Australia?
Hi!
I'm in Melbourne, born in NZ, but now lived in Aus for 11 yrs. Alice is fairly remote and generally hot. People might also label it feral and/or redneck. Wildlife is dingoes, 'roos, spiders, snakes.....not sure if they have crocs there too. Aboriginal people live there.....worth mentioning because there are some places in Aus where they are not visible at all and just don't live. You will sometimes see them sitting in groups in parks, reserves, shopping areas, just families hanging out. Alcohol might be banned, can't remember, or maybe just very tightly regulated. Aus is a great place for kids and yes, bananas are super expensive right now because of hurricanes that wiped out the banana plantations a couple of years ago. Food has to be trucked in to Alice, so can be a little expensive. Not too anti American in general, some people dont travel and just believe what they see in movies. A great opportunity, hope you get it! |
