s/o - Who are your fave parenting experts?

A spin off of a couple of recent threads on parenting styles and books.

Who do you like?
What books have worked for your family?
What about their approach do you like?

etc.

I LOVE Dr. Ray Guarendi. I've seen him speak and I really find him to offer a common sense approach to parenting.

One of my favorite quotes of his is this page http://www.drray.com/tips/beingrightsat.htm

I don't really have a good one for the baby toddler phase. When I was in that phase, we made our way through it with a lot of bits and pieces, a little Dr. Sears, a little Dr. Spock and everything in between.

I love the tried and true Dr. Sears. Alfie Kohn of "The Happiest Baby/Toddler on the Block" is great too. A huge fan of "Unconditional Parenting" as well as "Playful Parenting" by Lawrence Cohen. Oh, and "The Wonder Weeks" by Hetty Vanderijt!

Re: s/o - Who are your fave parenting experts?

I think "The Happiest Baby/Toddler on the Block" books are actually by Harvey Karp.

I like
- Jane Nelson, "Positive Discipline". One of my favorite ideas from her is that "kids do good when they feel good". She also says kids act out when they don't feel like they belong. When dd is going through a particularly trying phase, this helps me to try to see where she's coming from and to make a better effort to include her in my day-to-day activities. That usually solves the problem. But she also offers helpful ways to deal with bad behavior.

- Elizabeth Pantley, "The No-Cry Discipline Solution". She offers a lot of ways to prevent bad behavior, elicit good behavior in healthy and fun ways, and light-hearted ways to deal with bad behavior. One of my favorite things about this book is that she actually includes a chapter on parental anger, something most parenting books mention briefly but don't do justice to. We all get angry and it's nice to have that validated by an "expert" who also offers solutions.

And I really want to read "Playful Parenting" by Lawrence Cohen. Maybe that will be next.

I have to say my mother and mother in law are the best "experts" I've found

However, I LOVE the book That's My Son by Rick Johnson! It really helped me to understand my little boys and the way their minds are growing and developing!

Never thought of reading a book on parenting.

Thought I may read happiest baby/toddler on the block as it sounds interesting.

my BIL and his wife. I've read different books, and I've heard different approaches, but really, when it comes right down to it, I think one of the best things you can do is find a family whose children behave the way you want your children to behave, and ask them what they did.

I avoid reading most parenting stuff. I do use books for info...like Sears and a general one put out by the American Academy of Peds..when I have questions.

When I taught I loved a book called Conscious Discipline by Becky Bailey. When DS gets a little older I will probably re-read that. It is a great book for anyone with a child 3 and up.
