Signing !!!! So excited !!!

I have a thread on my dd's speech delay in the special needs but wanted to share here too . A lady from the program came over today to get papers signed so we can get things going to get her evaluated . Anyways as she was talking to my dd she was also signing . So I thought I'd ask more questions about signing . I always thought that it would keep the child from talking . Dd is 20 months and frustrated cause we can't always understand . So I looked up baby signing online so maybe I can learn a few and try to teach her . So today when I went to give her juice , I showed her the sign for it . Then she was actually trying to do it !!! I was so very excited and had to share with someone . Thanks

That is AWESOME!!! I taught all 6 of my kids baby sign. My 11 month old is learning...she squeezes hand for milk, but means drink. She blows kisses for both blowing kisses and thank you. When I say kiss daddy she puts her hand to her mouth. When she hears thank you she puts her hand to her mouth...It is so cute!

Re: Signing !!!! So excited !!!

That is wayyy awesome! Signing most definitely won't keep a baby from talking, I promise you. I used to teach deaf babies and families ASL and that's a common misconception/fear that is unfortunately supported by a lot of experts like audiologists. It's not true. ASL is a true language and it's more important that a child begin using language in any form early because those skills WILL transfer over as they develop speech. How cool is that that you are already seeing results? You get a BIG thumbs up from me. I looooove seeing wee ones sign. It's the cutest.

Re: Signing !!!! So excited !!!

if you can get a hold of some signing times dvds. my dd loves them and they are awesome for teaching us both! also look on youtube it is a great resource!

My major is human development and my emphasis was on early childhood. I did a major paper on signing and i have implemented sign language in several child care centers since graduation. the research is solid and it definitely does not hinder language skills at all, but signing actually activates the same part of the brain as spoken language. it IS a second language for many.

Re: Signing !!!! So excited !!!

definitely get the signing time dvds out from your local library, we started DS when he was 11months and he had tons of signs, still uses them sometimes when we can't understand him. although he became a signing time junkie, but better that than some other random TV junk.

Re: Signing !!!! So excited !!!

I found this website and it's been very helpful so far . http://www.signwithme.com/002_browse_signs.asp She's still repeating signs with me this morning . I don't think she really understands them yet other than baby . That one caught on quick . We're going on baby , dog , help me and juice . Then will work on more . Those are the important ones for her . She's prefers juice over milk , life is always about her dog and baby and help me for her frustration .

Lisonh, that is the site I have been using as well. I don't know any sign but I am starting to teach some to my 4 month old. So far I use change, milk, more, all done and cat. I want to add bath soon too! I can't wait to see her trying to sign back to me!
