how to get off the "well-child" radar
I have told our pediatrician that we do not do annual well-child examinations. We are prompt to take the kids in when there is a need, but we have opted out of well-child exams for the past few years, partly because they really push vaccinations at the exams. Partly because I don't need to hear their speeches on car seat safety when we are MORE meticulous than they are. We are raising kids #4-6...I think we know how to do it by now.
Every single time we encounter healthcare at the pediatrician's office they try to sneak in the need for the annual exam. My son had labs, and we need an appointment "to go over the labs and do a physical". I had to ask if he actually NEEDS the physical for the lab abnormality or is this the annual physical, to which I'm told that he is overdue for his physical. He actually only needed a visit to go over the lab results. I get reminder cards that my child(ren) is(are) overdue for the physical and, by the way, we can do the vaccinations at the same time FOR CONVENIENCE. Every time I have to call the office about anything they have to come up with a reason to have the kids seen for these appointments, and the majority of them are bull. They act like I just don't remember, am too busy to be bothered, or am ignorant. I am none of the above. I choose not to do well-child exams. Since when is this a problem? I assure you that their health is not neglected and we are very prompt with visits when necessary. This is a choice, not a neglect of their healthcare. So how do I politely but firmly tell them AGAIN that we choose not to do these and, should we choose otherwise, we will let them know? |

Re: how to get off the "well-child" radar
I don't know but I hear all of these bad things about all these doctors. I am just glad I love my doctor. We do all of our visits and am glad to do so but we never get anything about being over due or anything of the sort. Also my ped is not pushy or anything he usually just says they look great and that is that. We do vaccinate but my ped is pretty open with delayed vac etc, I think because he is very young maybe that helps. He also encourages rear facing until at least 2 so I think that is great. IDK I would really just say find a different doctor who is more in line with how you think.

Re: how to get off the "well-child" radar
This happened to us regarding vaccines and was with our insurance company. we do all well-child visits. It was a computer thing, they just removed us from that part of the system, and explained that they hoped it worked because no one ever asked before.

Re: how to get off the "well-child" radar
I love the doctor, but it is the office that is the problem. The one year when I dared to say we were still deciding what we were doing with vaccinations, the nurse literally ordered me to do them. I found out the next year that there was a competition between the different locations of this practice to see who get get the most vaccinations administered. I found this out because they won a TROPHY that was proudly displayed at the front desk, and it also stated the time frame that the competition was going on; same time that the nurse ordered me to do the vaccinations. (She didn't recommend, she just barked out the order). To me that is simply wrong. It is one thing to try to upsell soft drinks at a fast food restaurant, but trying to upsell vaccinations for a trophy?
I'm fine with clinical recommendations, but I simply do not like the manipulation I'm seeing and see these competitions as clouding the quality of care we are receiving. I really love this doctor, but their office staff needs to back off. I hate to have to leave her though. |

Re: how to get off the "well-child" radar
wow...Kara is just over a year old and hasnt been to the DR since 3 days after she was born...we went back in to check on some mild jaundice (barely there - not need for lights or anything) and havent been back since. I would find another provider (even if I loved the DR) if the staff was that was where we go.

Re: how to get off the "well-child" radar
Tell the dr. He should know if his office staff is pissing off his clientele and potentially messing up his money flow. Health care is not one-size-fits-all.
