Acetaminophen tied to childhood wheezing and allergies

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100813/...enol_allergies

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) A pair of studies suggests that the common painkiller acetaminophen -- better known as Tylenol in the U.S. -- may be fueling a worldwide increase in asthma.
According to one study out Thursday, acetaminophen could be responsible for as many as four in 10 cases of wheezing and severe asthma in teens.
While no one knows if the drug causes asthma by itself, another report -- published along with the first study -- shows for the first time that many toddlers took acetaminophen before they developed asthma symptoms such as wheezing.
"We have confirmed that acetaminophen use comes first, so a causal link is increasingly likely," said Dr. Alemayehu Amberbir, of Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia and the University of Nottingham in the UK

Wow. Good thing I very rarely medicate my kids and it is usually never Tylenol, that stuff is pretty much useless IME.

Wow I dug further in my university's database and found several studies published in peer-reviewed journals on this! I also saw some that mentioned maternal use while pregnant during the 1st and 3rd trimesters ups the risk as well.

ETA: oh! I found a good meta analysis and systematic review on it.

These are both very important things to take into consideration.

As for the maternal link, again, what about the parent history? And why was the mother using the meds?

I'm all for more research on this subject, but I absolutely think it's premature to start in on it this way.

I read these too, and as a Mother of a severely allergic child it's like reaching for your pitch fork every time a new study comes out!! (I'm at the point now where I can LOL a little at my own craziness on the subject)... I'm not hanging my hat on these, tylenol still used around here (sparingly when needed)

Re: Acetaminophen tied to childhood wheezing and allergies

Thats rather interesting.

DD was diagnosed with Asthma in March. Neither I or DH have asthma. The only person in my family with diagnosed Asthma was my Great grandmother.

DDs Asthma has gotten worse since March and she is now on 2 different inhalers. QVAR twice daily and then Albuterol for an emergency.

She also has moderate allergies to mold spores, dogs, grass and tree pollens, dust mites (no food allergies) that she has to take meds for as well.

Im not saying that Tylenol is what caused it (i wont get into what I, DH and the allergist thinks brought it all on) but its very interesting that they have found a relation between the tylenol and allergies/asthma.
