Do you let your kids get dirty?

And, by that I mean really dirty?

I ask because this past weekend we were camping with friends and the rains came. 3 straight hours of downpour. Our kids (mine and our friends') were out playing in the drainage ditch, sliding down the muddy hill into the fresh muddy rainwater in the pouring down rain. They were so dirty by the end that my daughter's underwear is permanently brown (was pink/blue) even after several washes and lots of stain spray.

I don't put pictures of my kids on forums, but oh my were they filthy and having a complete blast.

Our kids were the only ones we saw out there in the rain playing like we used to when we were kids. It was just rain, not a whisper of thunder or hail or other severe weather. It was plenty warm - 4-7 p.m. and in the low 80s.

The kids had the absolute best time. When asked what the best part of camping was, it was the muddy afternoon. Forget the raft down the river, the long bike ride or the hike. They had so much fun. We got a lot of looks, but I couldn't tell if it was people who couldn't believe we'd allow the kids to do that or if they thought it was great. I just know that we didn't see any other kids out playing in th rain like kids should.

Yep! I LOVE it when she does actually, because I know how much fun she had! I remember going out on my swing set after it rained and getting FILTHY. Ruining an outfit is totally worth an afternoon of awesome play, IMO

like PP, it depends if I'm willing to clean it up but most of the time yes. I just make sure they're wearing old play clothes, unlike DH who let DD run around digging dirt holes and jumping in wet leaves in the clothes and shoes she'd worn to church

I voted other simply because I would, but Kearnan won't. He can't stand even controlled messy (finger paints are a no go for him). It's a sensory thing, even playing with shaving cream bothers him. Tharen gets pretty good and dirty though. I don't mind if they don't mind getting hosed or playing in the sprinkler to get sort of clean before they come back in my house LOL.

I wouldn't mind - but I have four prissy girls who wouldn't DARE get dirty! LOL! I would hear nothing but whining that they got mud on them. SHEESH!

Re: Do you let your kids get dirty?

I might let mine get that muddy at home, where we have a washing machine and shower, but not camping. We usually camp where there is no running water or showers, so no way! They would have had to use all our drinking and cooking water to clean off!

But it sounds like fun. At home.
