That is awesome! Mine are all late signers. Will's first word was "more" at 12 months. And I can't get him to sign anything else!!!

Re: DS signed his first word!

I'm deaf so he's a CODA (child of a deaf adult), they tend to sign earlier than babies who are predominantly exposed to a spoken language if that makes sense. Most babies that use ASL from Signing Time or baby sign language I see signing around 9 to 12 mos. Whatever their age, I love seeing signing babies!!!

That's awesome momma! I was *this close* to being an interpreter before I had my second. they both signed at about 8 months. I love his choice for a first word. maybe he will potty train early?

Oh, yes....that helps. We had a neighbor girl who is deaf and it was great that my girls knew some basic signs to communicate with her. I think she really liked seeing Anna sign to her when she was 1 1/2. And yes, I LOVE seeing signing babies, too! Although, I think sign language in general is a beautiful language. I could watch people sign to each other all day and not have any idea what they are saying but still enjoy watching.

Yes! I too was nearly an intrepeter (have bachelors in interpreting) and use lots of signs with DD. First one was 'nurse' around 10 mos. 19-mos now and probably has 30 signs! She can learn a new one in a few minutes if it's something she's interested in. Its so cute to see signing babies! Of course, most of her signs are 'off' but I equate that to a toddler mispronouncing spoken words too.

Re: DS signed his first word!

It's never too late to start. you just have to be consistent. There are books of baby signs, though they aren't true ASL all the time. go to your library and see what books they have on sign language
