How do you attach fabric to crochet?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this dress, http://www.etsy.com/listing/54948709...s%5B1%5D=title and want to make my girls some. I can not figure out though, how to attach the gathered fabric to the crochet top piece without making it look warped....Would I do the skirt part onto an elastic and then sew it on to the crochet? Or just stretch the crochet to sew the fabric directly on? I like that on that dress, the crochet part lays so flat...Help! What is the technique to sew fabric on to crochet??? Thank you!

Re: How do you attach fabric to crochet?

So looking at the pictures, I would make the top. Then take your fabric piece and sew a seam in it so that you have a tube. Hem it on one edge. Then on the opposite edge sew two lines of basting stitches. Pull up the basting so that it will fit the crocheted part. I would also mark my center front, center back and sides so that I could get even gathers around it. Then you can pin everything together and sew it. It looks like it would basically be topstitched onto the crocheted part.

I would maybe even lay some washable interfacing over the crochet part so that you don't stretch it while sewing. Therefore your layers would be: fabric, crochet, interfacing.

Hope this makes some kind of sense! Let me know if you need me to explain it better.

Yes, that makes sense. I was worried about what the inside would look like...if having the fabric gathered there would look messy? Maybe I could even sew a little ribbon or strip of satin to cover that up? Thanks for explaining it!

I would attach your "sandwhich" with a zigzag stitch. then flip it and topstitch.

There's a pattern on ravelry (knit) that's essentially the same idea. She explains how to put the two together.

Thank you! Ok, yes, I was thinking to do it that way, but I was worried about how it would look, both on the inside and also about it stretching the crochet. I guess I will just have to try it and see how it does! Thank you!
