Re: Fever & febrile sezures :(

Some kids just get febrile seizures. Contrary to popular belief, they don't cause brain damage. Its actually a drastic and fast fast rise in temp that can cause that, and usually you won't see that from any type of sickness. You might see it from a sunburn or vax reaction though...that type of thing.
I know its really scary, but she will be fine. The best thing to do is let it run its course..... Hope she feels better!

What she's having is more like a twitch or a spazam than a full on sezure.

Re: Fever & febrile sezures :(

just woke up and is nursing well now lol She's nursed for about 8 hours today I swear I'm going to be engorged when she gets better, she hardly ever wants to nurse because she's usually too busy crawling around lol.

Re: Fever & febrile sezures :(

This is what I was told to do for DD-it's contrary to what some of the other moms posted but since dd just had a major seizure this is what we do and what works for us.

It's not how high the fever gets it how fast it gets there-usually cutting a tooth doesn't send a fever up that high-although I think some babies just run higher temps with teeth.

Alternate Tylenol and Motrin every 3 hours warm baths and lots of fluids-Do not wipe with alcohol this can cause chills which makes the body fight back and go higher.

DDs seizure lasted over 5 minutes and she stopped breathing and was paralyzed for hours after wards-so my peds severely stress to keep her temp down what ever it takes. If she's over 101.5 then I have to take her in. Normally if it's over 102.5 and not showing signs of coming down then I take them in. If your dd is having "twitches" like that then I would definitely take her in to be seen. The specialist at the hospital told me that most of the time they don't cause any lasting damage but any seizure can cause long term affects. There are too many variables with the brain to be 100% sure.

I hope that she's feeling better and that you got her fever down and that tooth has popped through for her. I hope I didn't scare you-it sounds like you have it under control-Our way of taking care of dd is because of the severity of hers and the problems she had afterwards-not necessarily due to her having one.

ITA with Mary. Alternate the Tylenol and the Mortin and give her warm baths. Even if she is in the tub what seems like most of the day.
Also make sure you are giving her the correct amount of the medicine. Makes a huge difference.

Re: Fever & febrile sezures :(

As scary as they are, febrile seizures won't "hurt" her. She's 8mos, I'm sure you're right there anyway, right? I would have her seen if she seizes for more than 2 mins at a time or so. That's what we were recommended when A was having them.

They are just a psyiological reaction to a really high, fast fever. Her brain just kinda goes "whoa, WTH is that? Bzzt" <--- short, condensed version! I've gotten conflicting information from different nurses; 1 said it was a reaction to the fever spiking quickly, and the other said it was a reaction to the fever coming DOWN so quickly.

Just alternate the Motrin and Tylenol (every 3-4 hours) and keep her lightly dressed. Keep her pumped full of liquids and she should be fine.

I know *they* say that having 1 febrile seizure doesn't guarantee that they'll have them again, but each time she has a fever, you have to stay right on top of it, cause it's shown that she's susceptible to them, kwim?

They are the scariest things EVER! Sorry if this is a repeat - I started this post about 2 hours ago! LOL Got sidetracked with the dks.

Re: Fever & febrile sezures :(

Thank you for the info mamas!!! She woke up this morning a lot cooler than yesterday her teeth seem to be hurting pretty bad, but at least that can be treated with hylands and a chew toy!

We don't vaccinate, we kept our sons intact, we use cloth diapers, we co-sleep, we extended RF, we breastfeed, but we watch too much tv and I totally dig plastic! Everyone has their issues, lol.
