Question about 10 mth old refusing BM

Hi! My 10 mth old just started to crawl and he is also learning to stand and all of a sudden starting this afternoon he wasn't interested in nursing (he only nursed once between 3pm and now, and this is a 25lb'er who never refuses mamma!)! He is almost exclusively bf and gets solids once or twice a day...My dh is worried he is self weening, but I am guessing that he may not be feeling well (he has a little sniffle), or may be teething again (he has 8 teeth as of 2 months ago though...), so any other ideas?? He did eat applesauce tonight and then afterwards he nursed, but like I said, only 1 time!

UPDATE: I guess he is over it as there are no longer problems! Thanks everyone!

Tara

It could be a nursing strike... just keep offering!! It will pass... I read somewhere babies under 1 rarely if never wean themselves from the breast.

Try nursing in a quiet dark place or in the shower.

It could be he is so interested in the new world around him (now that he is mobile) he doesn't feel like sitting still for a few mins for num nums....keep offering, self weaning at this age almost doesn't exist. Try a lot of skin to skin contact, take a bath with him and try in there....Good Luck and this will pass!!!!

yeah I am sure its not self weaning yet mama

heres some info on strikes...

they're generally short lived. The PP gave nice suggestions to encourage a session.

Yep I agreee. My dd was/is the SAME way. If there is something she is learning or if something is going on around her I can't get her to nurse. Hang in there I'm SURE he's not self weaning although many ppl think that's what's happening he's really just learning about everything and Not in the mood to LAY back and nurse. LOL KEep offering!!

Yeah just keep offering at his usual nursing times even if it's just a little bit. We are going through the same thing ds is 10.5 months it's been getting better.

eta...also wanted to mention, alot of times I would think ds was finished because he was sitting up but i found I had to keep putting him back on constantly to make him finish, it was a fight but if he didn't he'd be hungry right after I set him down.

Also I am curious are you feeding on one side at a time or both????

Re: Question about 10 mth old refusing BM

Thanks for the tip - he did it again today - nursed OK in the mrning at 8am and then by 12:30 (he doesn't ever go longer than 4 hrs), he tuened his head away...so dh and I met for lunch, he was getting very tired and ready for a nap, cyring etc. SO I get home, draw his blinds and offer myself once again, but no...then, after 15 minutes of crying, I offered again, and he nursed! Yeah!

Re: Question about 10 mth old refusing BM

At that age, my ds got SUPER picky about where and when he would nurse. It had to be either in our nursing chair (recliner) or bed. If I tried *anywhere* else, he just wouldn't eat. If anyone besides me and dh was in the room, he wouldn't eat. If the TV was on, he wouldn't eat. If he was feeling even the tiniest bit sick or teething, he wouldn't eat. If dh had just gotten home from work...well, you get the idea.

It did pass, although he still won't eat in really busy, full of distraction places, so no more NIP for us.
