Recovery time from GI Virus and ER visit?

My ds (15 months) ended up in the er last Saturday for the day after a bad gi virus. It was pretty awful, first they couldn't find a vein and then he screamed for about a long time and they told me not to nurse him to calm him down because he would throw up. I ended up nursing him and he ended up throwing up and he kept crying. He seemed better after fluids and sugar and we came home Saturday night. He threw up until Sunday and since then he has had diarreha but it has been improving daily. His spirits have been getting better also but he is miserable some times, mostly at night and I am wondering is this is just a normal response to all he has been throug at this point. He is nursing constantly day and night(sometimes for over an hour at a time) and screaming at night. Last night he screamed for hours. Nothing seems to comfort him. Historically he has not been a good sleeper but in December he really started to improve and we haven't seen such an upset baby at night since then. Also, he screams if dh or I so much as leave the room to pee which is also unlike him. I realize the er was traumatizing and we are trying to give him lots of extra love and holding/carrying but I just want to see if anyone thinks this is something more serious that I should be worried about right now. TIA
