I need help with pickling
We are attempting to pickle some cucumbers. I was using some old glass jars we had around, like spaghetti sauce and one is from jelly. I can't get them to re-seal? My directions were to cover them with hot water, bring that water to a boil, turn off the burner and let it sit until it was cool enough for me to pull the jars out bare-handed. And it said that if they were not already sealed we should soon hear a pop and it'll seal. Well they've been out of the water for about an hour and they're still not sealed. What should I do?

Re: I need help with pickling
You are supposed to use brand new lids when sealing jars. Those jars will not re-seal and your food will spoil if you do not use new jars and lids.

Re: I need help with pickling
Ok the sauce jar is now sealed!!! Guess I just needed to wait a little longer. Still waiting on the jelly jar to seal.

Re: I need help with pickling
Me either. To be safe, put them in the fridge. Next time, use jars that accept canning lids. If you aren't using canning jars, they can shatter more easily, and if you aren't using real canning lids, the seal may not work well.

Re: I need help with pickling
Ok, I'll put them in the fridge. Just 2 jars. We just wanted to try it out. We didn't even use pickling cucumbers, we plan on planting the right kind next year.
