Crisco ultimate chocolate chip cookies
has anyone made these exactly as written? are they slightly on the salty side?
also do you use a spoon to mix the sugar and crisco and milk and vanilla? i assumed that with baking, you would use a whisk for everything.. lol hmmm didn't work out so well.. I made these for the first time and my first batch of cookies ever lol but they were kinda salty.. would it be okay to use less salt next time? or could it have been just me? hahaha i used all chocolate chips, no nuts if that makes any difference to the taste? thanks! |

You can salt to taste. You don't even need to add it at all.
Whisks are for sauces and whipping cream, and things like that. You don't use them for anything else. For cookies, if you aren't using a mixer, then use a spoon. Personally, I think that Hershey's has the best cake and cookie recipes, so maybe try one of theirs next time. GL!

Re: Crisco ultimate chocolate chip cookies
Salt does serve a purpose in baking. It enhances flavors, makes bread dough stronger, and controls rise. It's in recipes for a reason.
http://www.joythebaker.com/blog/2008...lt-for-baking/ I recommend using common table salt for recipes (unless a particular type of salt is specified), since larger flake salt doesn't dissolve as well in baked goods. I use this recipe from King Arthur Flour for chocolate chip cookies; I substitute 1 stick (1/2 cup) Land O' Lakes margarine for the shortening because I'm not crazy about the taste of shortening: http://www.kingarthurflour.com/recip...cookies-recipe And if you can, use a mixer. Creaming the butter is much easier with a mixer than a spoon. |

Re: Crisco ultimate chocolate chip cookies
My chocolate chip cookie recipe calls for 1 tsp. salt and 1 tsp. baking soda. I've cut the salt to 1/2 tsp. with no problems.

Re: Crisco ultimate chocolate chip cookies
That sounds like a lot of salt, considering you also have baking soda. The recipe I use and linked to has 1/2 tsp of salt and 1 tsp baking soda.

I would agree. I think that's the Toll House recipe (on the back of a bag of knock-off chocolate chips). I think the 1/2 tsp salt is plenty.
