TUTORIAL: "Extended Tab Prefolds" convert your own prefolds!!

Just thought i'd make a how to tutorial for all you wonderful mamas. i don't have the time or energy to keep up with all the orders, so i wanted to share the basics of converting them yourself if you are talented and wish to do your own!! ---please remember this is for converting your own prefolds for personal use, not for sale of prefolds made of this pattern or design. the name "extended tab prefold" is currently under paperwork for being trademarked and is pending patent. thankyou!

there are several modifications you can do to this also, but this is the basics and easiest to follow

Start out with a fully prepped prefold. any brand size whatever you want to use. trim off both the serged ends with scissors or a rotary cutter. be sure to pull out any extra lint or fuzz that happens to be accumulated in the corners while you have it opened up

next trim one side of your prefold off about 1.5-2 inches in from the side. this will vary based on the size prefold you used

step 3 is to cut this small piece of fabric in half and open in up flat

fold each section in half and trim in a diagonal like shape. these will be your "tabs"

next--serge or overstitch the side of your prefold that was trimmed off. you only have to serge about 1/3-1/2 way down as the rest will be finished in the following steps

add your folded tabs to the new trimmed prefold using a overlock stitch on your sewing maching or a zigzag if that works better for you

at this point, if you wish to add an embellishment strip of fabric, do it now. just stitch the fabric down in both lengths. you dont' have to worry about the ends

final step. this works best if you have a serger. but if not your can trim the edges even and use a zigzag or overlock stitch on your sewing maching.

start at the top corner of your new extended tab, follow the whole way around till you get to the opposite side top corner of tab.

cut thread and turn prefold. now trim the full length of the top

your new "extended tab" prefolds congrats and great job~~

Awesome tutorial, Meagan! Love your work!

Just wondering, what serger do you have, and does it ever have trouble serging already-prepped prefolds? I had read a tutorial for trimming prefolds elsewhere and it had suggested not serging prepped prefolds (though unprepped is ok).

Oh my goodness - thank you SO much!! I have been ogling your diapers for a couple of weeks now since I joined DS and wishing that I could figure out how to convert my prefolds into extended tabs since I'm not allowed to buy any new diapers right now I was literally just coming into this forum to ask if anyone had tried to do the conversion before and here you are with this tutorial - you're the best!!

i have a JUKI MO-654DE it's a workhorse of a machine and is technically an "industrial grade" machine. it has no problems sewing through all those layers. but, i imagine some machines may have more trouble with it. you can always try it unprepped. but your tabs will shrink so make them a bit bigger
