Play dough...
Ok, so I am not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I will try. So I want to make my own play dough for my son to play with that is non-toxic. Have any of you done that? Thanks!

Re: Play dough...
It's so easy!
1 cup flour 1 cup boiling water 2 tablespoons cream of tartar 1/2 cup salt 1 tablespoon oil food coloring (optional) Mix and knead together. It's not sticky and doesn't dry out. There is a point as you are making it where you think it's going to be a sticky mess and not come together, but it always works out. You can also put things like peppermint or pumpkin pie seasoning in it for seasonal things. |

Re: Play dough...
We use that same recipe and love it! It's so nice and it doesn't make the house stink like playdoh!

Re: Play dough...
I love the smell of real playdoh. And it is not toxic. I hate the homemade stuff because it is always too oily.

Re: Play dough...
If you use neon colored food coloring the colors are awesome.

Re: Play dough...
Yep, homemade as per above is awesome, I use a very similar recipe. I know the bought stuff says it's non-toxic, but my 2 1/2 yr old still loves to chomp on it, and I would rather he chomped on homemade stuff, at least with the strong salt taste, there is a limit to how much he ingests.

Re: Play dough...
I dunno, I don't think homemade is any safer than Playdoh. It is all nasty to eat. Food coloring has propylbaraben in it. And cream of tartar, which is also in Playdoh apparently, is an eye and skin irritant and can pose health risks if ingested in too large of quantities. So, I don't think homemade is any safer than store bought. We prefer the intensity of colors in the store bought and I like the smell.
I did not let my kid play with any kind of dough when they were still eating it. I was too worried about all the doughs to let them put any of it in their mouthes.

I'm not sure how this comes out but someone gave me a recipe for edible playdoh. I haven't made it because we don't have the problem that my dd eats it but I have kept the recipe in case she ever does attempt to eat it. I'm pretty sure though it can only be made in the one color though... Peanut Butter Playdough 1/2 cup peanut butter 1/2 cup honey 1 cup nonfat powdered milk mix well. squeeze and pull until shiny and soft.
