Re: Can you Mill Flax Seed by Hand?

i would suggest the kind of mortar and pestle tht is not smooth marble. to slippery. the rough rock type would grind much better.

Like PP said, use a coffee grinder.

Yup, I use a coffee grinder too, and they're cheap. As someone else mentioned, the seeds stay fresher when they're whole. I would just grind a week's worth at a time.

I would get a coffee grinder and then store them in the fridge.

Re: Can you Mill Flax Seed by Hand?

If you do go to an Asian market- try to get a Japanese mortar & pestle. It has little ridges in the bottom of the mortar that help to hold the seeds still so you can grind them better. I use mine for flax & sesame seeds. I just got a tiny one, but they come in a lot of sizes & are inexpensive. OR you can go to importfoods.com & get one just like the one Jamie Oliver uses. That's the one my DH luvs most.

I also suggest a cheap coffee grinder, they work great. I keep my whole flax seeds in the fridge and only grind right before use. I use whole flax too though, we have it in oatmeal every morning, seems to digest just fine!
