is sushi safe while bf?
I love sushi!! While pregnant I only at the cooked stuff, that was no fun. At a recent doctors visit I inquired about mercury levels in canned tuna. He advised me to stay away from tuna and shellfish. So with that said, what is safe to eat sushi-wise?

Re: is sushi safe while bf?
interesting...
My first OB was Japanese and his wife was actually from Japan. He said eating sushi while pregnant WAS okay...but to be sure to use the wasabi (kills germs) and go to a nice place that was reputable and had fresh stuff. I ate it through both of my pregnancies and all the time now that I"m nursing. I think it's fine.

Re: is sushi safe while bf?
Sushi is not safe, because you can get Hepatitis and so can your baby through you. That being said... I eat it while pregnant and nursing. I love it and it's good for you. You are more likely to get a food born illness from a deli counter than a great sushi place IMHO. Also, you would be broke by the time you ate that much tuna to worry about mercury in sushi form, lol! I like salmon myself, and squid, and roe, well everything but crab

Re: is sushi safe while bf?
I'm sure there is some mercury, but consider the serving size and how much you eat it. A couple ounces 1x per month? Unless you are rich or own a sushi bar, lol!
Here's the fda link on mercury in seafood: http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/%7Edms/admehg3.html

Thanks for the link. My doc just got me worried for nothing. Now, I can enjoy my dinner tonight and not worry about harming my little one.

I eat it. Probably about once every two weeks. I figured millions of Japanese women can't be wrong.

Re: is sushi safe while bf?
Nope, it's totally fine! Ginger that is served with it has natural properties to help prevent food-borne illness. SO eat that and a little wasabi and enjoy your yummy sushi!
