New Name Dilemma
So I was all set to use Elaina Marie as DD2's name. MIL's middle name is Elaine & my mom's is Marie. Then we started telling people and some have mispronounced it. Others are saying you could call her Ellie. We wanted to use Laney as a nickname. This part really gets me. MIL decided she didn't like DD's name, Eden, when she was born. She has been calling her Edie from the beginning. Now she has half of their family calling her that. DH even does it! I don't really mind Edie. I think it is a cute name. It is just so like her to do whatever she wants and disregard my opinion.
Rant over. Background established. I really don't want her to ruin DD2's name for me too. I am thinking about just calling her Laney instead of Elaina. Is that too informal? My name is Katherine (after my great grandma) and I honestly hated having two names growing up. I wish I could have been Kate or Katie all along. I would love some opinions.

Re: New Name Dilemma
Keep Elaina ( Alaina was DD2's name for most of the pregnancy, we didnt use it because we didnt want people to say Laney
) and call her Laney, I bet most people will follow after what you say

Re: New Name Dilemma
There's always the name Delaney too which I really like, and Laney is the obvious only middle name. But you may not like that name. I think Laney can certainly be a first name though, so if you don't want her to have "two names," then just go with Laney.

Re: New Name Dilemma
I like Laney and think it's really cute. Use it however you want! I think names have gotten so varied that mostly any name will be mispronounced these day, honestly.

Re: New Name Dilemma
I don't think Laney is too informal, but I'm not often a fan of names ending in -ey. I'd likely name her Lane, and use Laney as a nickname (really no other way to nickname Lane, which should cut out MIL's thing)

Re: New Name Dilemma
I'd give her the full name but just tell people you named her Laney.

Re: New Name Dilemma
If people were going to call her Laney either way, which would you prefer? If you go with Elaina, you can always fashion the birth announcement in a way that let's people know from the very beginning what you are going to call her. I once got a birth announcement that said Trip at the top, and then went on to say we announce the birth of John Doe III. It was a nice way to let everyone know the baby's full name at the same time telling everyone what name they were going to use on a daily basis.
