My Mood:
travel to higher elevation late in pregnancy

We are planning a quick vacation just to get away for a few days. One of the possibilities is to go to the Smoky Mountains. We live at sea level. All the reading I've done about concerns with higher elevation while pregnant have referred to really high elevations like Denver and above. The Smoky Mountains are no where near as high as that. So, does it seem like that would be fine? I'm 34 weeks pregnant. I've vacationed there in the past, but was only about 20 weeks then. I had no problems.

I told the midwife we'd be traveling and she was fine with that, but at the time I didn't know we might go all the way to the mountains, so I didn't ask her about that.

Re: travel to higher elevation late in pregnancy

I live in Denver so the high altitude doesn't affect me, but there are elevations around us that are even higher so I've looked into it as well. From what I've read, the main concern is being short of breath. You will just need to stop more often to catch your breath, since pregnant women already get winded easily. My SIL came and visited us in July when she was 30 weeks pregnant, and she's from Texas. She seemed to have no issues, and she even visited one of the highest peaks at 14,200 feet (Denver is 5280 ft.). I think you'll be fine, but if you need reassurance it's always best to give your doctor a call.
