At what age did you start solids?

If you started 6 months or later, what kept you from deciding to start sooner?

DS is 5 months and I was thinking of starting him soon - just want to make sure I don't blindly follow my pediatrician's advice of 4 -6 months. . .

Thanks for sharing your experience, Mamas!

We started at 8 months because DS was ready then. He started oogling our food and starting was SO, SO much easier than with DD who started at 4 months--don't ask I was a sheep and followed peds orders like the word of god--little did I know they're wrong about developemental stuff 99% of the time (IME). If you're not 100% at ease with the idea--wait. You'll know when you're babe is ready.

Re: At what age did you start solids?

Asher will be six months in just under two weeks. We started rice cereal about a week ago, because he has lately gotten VERY interested in everything we eat. He's also shown all of the other signs of being ready (sitting up, able to pull away, etc), so we figured we'd offer him some. He started lunging at the spoon to get the cereal! He had no problems with swallowing, or gagging on it.

We'll probably start actual solids here in a few weeks. I am going to be making our own.

Re: At what age did you start solids?

Both my kids ate Cheerios & a little fresh fruit before a year but I did start giving them solids until a year. Both are/were breastfed and I didnt really see a need to start solids since they both were very healthy and gaining weight great! I personally just felt they should be eatting solids until they could crawl & sit up on their own (of course they did that before a year) Now they are both great eatters.

I would wait until he acts like he is very interested in food, I guess.

I have just started giving samuel a little now and than (he is 7 months old) We will not give it to him as meals until he is one. I researched it 7 years ago lol so I cant remember why but do remember it isnt best to give your little ones so much so early on. Oh and we wont give him meat until he is 2. You really should look at the benifits and cons and make the choice. Sry Im not much of a help at the moment I used to have all the info now its in the back of my brain filed away

Re: At what age did you start solids?

we started at 5.5 months. if/when we have another babe, i will be waiting as long as the kid will let me!! i don't like having to decide what food to feed, make it, serve it, clean up. start over. i know its not really all that much trouble, and im sure it not as bad with only one to clean up and feed, but that's my opinion. it was fun in the beginning, and really, they were ready. but i will be waiting longer next time. i like the idea of waiting until the babe is ready for self feeding, which i read about here for the first time. sounded reasonable to me.

Re: At what age did you start solids?

Well I didn't really know any better with Allie so we started around 4 1/2 to 5 months. She did well and was sitting well on her own but, knowing what I know now, I wish I had waited a little longer.

With Nora I will wait a minimum of 6 months. Prob be more like 6 months to a year. Especially b/c she has pretty bad reflux.

Re: At what age did you start solids?

We started at about 10 months with our last and that was the way to go IMO. I did it based on allergies and the fact that I was just so busy with little ones. She was fine and nursing and supplementing with formula and didn't seem to be hungry, so we waited until she could pick up the food and eat it. She did great and I will totally go that route again! Her allergies have been much more minor.

I started with boy boys at about 10 months (with much opposition from their ped.) They didnt really show interest until then, and I knew all they really needed was breastmilk anyway.
