A positive hospital birth
Yes, it can happen! I feel like there aren't enough positive birth stories out there in our culture, so I thought I would share mine (in a nut shell).
We used a midwifery practice that delivers out of a local hospital. A friend delivered drug-free with that practice, so that's who we went with. I was a little nervous to deliver in a hospital, as I really hate them, but this was our first and we didn't really know what to expect. My contractions started the evening of New Year's Eve. We were enjoying a night in with dinner and a movie while my contractions consistently came and went without pain. The midwife suggested getting in the tub to speed things along, so I did. And sure enough, at midnight on the nose on New Year's Day, active labor began! We headed to the hospital, arriving at about 1am (although I don't remember time after this point...). I was 6cm upon arrival and everything was going well. The contractions were intense (little did I know--I didn't find out until my 6week postpartum checkup, but I had SPD and did this whole thing with a dislocated pubic bone), but the break in between was bliss. The nurses took my birth preferences to heart and went over them bullet point by bullet point with us. Oddly, by the time I was 9cm, my water wasn't yet broken. So the midwife did the trick and I hopped in the tub again. After a little while there, I knew I was ready to push. I got on the bed in the squatting position and after 30 minutes of pushing, she was out! My DH even got to catch her! The nurses were great and our midwife was amazing--so positive, encouraging, helpful and kind. I can't say enough about how she helped make an amazing birth experience for all of us. And how cool is it that our LO has a birthday (1-1-11) that no one will forget and that will always be celebrated!!!
