Heard a sad story today

I was talking to my mom on the phone this morning and she told me a story that not only nearly broke my heart, but also made me sick to my stomach. I just needed to share this and get it off my chest because I've been thinking about it all day.

Yesterday DS and I went to the mall to get him some new underwear since he is pretty much totally out of diapers now. After getting the undies we went to visit my mom who works in the the pharmacy at the grocery store in that mall. My DS was so excited about his new underwear and wanted to show his grandma. Now here's where my mom's part of the story comes in...after we left my mom went back to doing her work and she was chatting with a couple co-workers about how her grandson wanted to show her the new underwear that he got and how he was so happy about it. One of my mom's co-workers has a 2 year old and she said to my mom, "he's not even 2 and he's out of diapers?! I tried to train my daughter a couple weeks ago. It was on the weekend and I left her out of a diaper and told her that if she had to go pee then she had to tell me. Well, she peed on the floor 3 times that day! I spanked her SO hard!"

I practically fell over when my mom told me this. That poor little girl! How can her mom honestly think that after 2 years of peeing in a diaper her daughter can just automatically know how to control her bladder and not have any accidents?!

Anyways, thanks for listening. I've been fuming over this since this morning so it feels a little better to get it out there. Though I'm still concerned for that little girl.

jeez. I can understand frustration, potty learning is hard business... but spanking her? And on the FIRST try?
That's uncool. Poor little girl, it'll probably take even longer now, she'll be afraid to try in case she doesn't do it "right"!

That's awful! And not to mention that another reason for delayed potty learning can be food allergies/sensitivities.

It bothered me when I read about someone spanking their child for resisting diaper changes several months ago. Can we really blame them for fighting diaper changes? We wouldn't want to wear diapers! So why should they? Ugh.

That is sad and I think it will take her longer now I get frustrated when DD has an accident because I know she can go on the toilet but I would never think of spanking her for that!

ugh... really? I'm sure the spanking worked like magic to control a 2 y.o.'s bladder... not. Well, I hope that lady come to her senses.

That's sad. Maybe she's isolated and doesn't have experience handling young children. Have your mom tell her co-workers about the forums out there that can help with potty training issues. Like this one! If nothing else, it helps us vent.
