Smile 15mo PL'ing - need trainer suggestions

Hi Mamas,

Much to my surprise, my 15 month son decided that he wanted to use the potty (like big sister). So he goes 4-5 times per day on the potty, and he's getting pretty good at telling me he needs to go. But sometimes he forgets, and we're not even attempting naps or overnight.

with a kiddo so young, I'm really thinking waterproof trainers (or whatever the equivalent of pull ups would be). I appreciate your thoughts! I have Imse Vimse trainers and a a blueberry trainer, but they really aren't waterproof. I can't decide how I want to go on this.

He's a small guy, too - 30" tall, only 20#. Thanks, mamas!

Jenny

It sounds like he's off to a great start! My DS started showing interest a couple months back and now he's in undies during the day and even for his daily nap, and most nights he stays dry now too. This all happened very quickly and we pretty much skipped trainers all together. I know it doesn't happen that fast for everyone but if your child is taking the lead it might happen sooner than you think. So from my experience, my personal opinion of trainers (especially the waterproof kind) are that theyre kind of pointless. Or at least not necessary. When do you intend to put him in the trainers and what do you think trainers will do for your LO that a cloth diaper won't? If it's just for around the house and you want trainers for the pull up/pull down factor then I would say just stick with the trainers that you have. They'll catch a single pee accident and basically that's all a trainer really needs to do. I would also do some bare bum time. This may result in a few puddles on the floor but it may also help your LO make the connection between the feeling of going and the outcome. Bare bum time definitely gave my DS a boost. Once your DS starts to maintain bladder (and possibly bowel) control more, you may also find that he's holding it while you're out of the house for short trips. Once that becomes a little more consistent then I would say just go for it and do undies or the non-waterproof trainers while out. Just bring along a change of undies and pants just in case. Whether he pees in his undies or in a trainer, you're going to have to change some of his clothing. When it came to PLing, I kind of took a throw all caution to the wind approach. I needed a little nudge from a mama on here to take the plunge into doing undies at night, but once I went for it, it felt great! Basically the mama told me to give my little one the credit for staying dry (even if it wasn't allll the time and there was still the possibility of an accident). Your LO probably won't even notice the difference between his diapers and waterproof trainers and continuing to put him in a diaper when he's showing signs of progression may not be helping him move forward as quickly as he's capable of doing. Let him have some big boy undies Maybe that approach won't work for you, but I think you should at least give it a shot. Best of luck!

Have you looked at EcaPants? They don't pull up, but they're easy to undo and re-do for quick potty visits, and a 15-mo might be able to work the velcro ones himself if you show him how. With the doubler, the waterproof ones contain a full daytime accident just fine, although they have to be changed promptly. Which you'd want to do anyway, for awareness reasons.

I've been dabbling in some pling with my 17 mo. dd - she always tells me when she has gone in her diaper and I'd like to get to the next step. For us, the gerber cotton training pants and dappi pull on covers work great! I did the imse vimse trainers with my son and they were so expensive - the dappis work perfectly and are a fraction of the price. I use those for going out and about - the gerber trainers are absorbent enough to catch (almost) one pee.

You could try just a cover and a more absorbent underwear, if you can find them that small. I did a lot of naked time with DD. But for us it seemed like she had to potty train twice because she understood and went potty all the time when she was naked but once I put anything on her (even swimsuit) she would pee in it.

How big is his waist? I have a few pull-on style (2 without side snaps, 1 with snaps) that I used with DD. She wasn't that young but she is little. Her waist now is 16.5 inches and thighs are 11 inches. Anyway, if you are interested send a PM or look in the EC thread of the FSOT section.

The absorbent training pants and the cover sound like they might work. I've actually been using his fitteds (snap) with no cover, and trainers, and even velcro BG AIOs (with no pants). He's been doing OK, but I swear this kid pees every 20 minutes. Not sure how to work this part out - I'm just taking him on a schedule, and encouraging every time he goes or tries to go (we miss it about half the time or more - though he'll go try to get on the potty). Thanks for the encouragement and good ideas mamas!

Those Ecapants look cool! I'll have to check the FSOT in the EC section...

Thanks again!

DD at around that age was going about that often sometimes. With naked time, she was doing really well, and being a girl means she could just have a skirt or dress on. It wasn't until she was older when I started noticing that she was going for longer stretches between peeing that she really started "getting it" more.

If you are handy with a sewing machine you might be able to make him some "absorbent underwear" by folding up a washcloth or cutting a prefold or something and sewing just the top and bottom into the underwear.

we've tried a lot of things. antsy pants and fashionably green baby both make pull up style trainers. with antsy pants you can add absorbency by stuffing with prefold/insert. FGB has AI2 style and AIO styles. we've also had some luck using my son's knickernappies since they pull up and down pretty easily (elasticized at waist and back). hth.
