Tahini-less hummus ideas

I have everything I need for hummus, except tahini. I'm to lazy to go to the grocery store, lol. I know I can make it w/o it, but is there something I could use that would still give it that kick the tahini gives. TIA

This is the recipe I use. It doesn't call for tahini. I use the changes in the first comment as well.

Re: Tahini-less hummus ideas

I don't really like tahini, so I always make my hummus without it, lol! I usually use a can of garbanzo beans, extra virgin olive oil, salt, garlic, cumin, and some red pepper flakes.

Re: Tahini-less hummus ideas

I've heard of using peanut butter but never tried it... a long time ago someone posted that there's a guy on food network that uses pb instead of tahini.

Re: Tahini-less hummus ideas

I discovered this recipe here on DS and no tahini. I can't remember who posted it but I'm giving credit to whoever you are!

"No tahini" hummus

1 large clove of garlic or spoonful of jarred chopped garlic
1 can (15.5 oz) of garbanzo (chick peas) beans (I've only used rehydrated dried beans and they are wonderful)
3 tbs. sour cream
3 tbs. lemon juice (it says fresh but I use the bottled kind)
1/2 t. salt
1/4 t. ground cumin
1/4 c. extra virgin olive oil

Mince garlic (if you use fresh) in the food processor (I use a blener). Add everything else but save the olive oil. Process until ALMOST smooth. With machine still running add the olive oil until mixture is smooth.

Re: Tahini-less hummus ideas

petuniajo I made your's and all I can say is "NOM NOM NOM". It's in the fridge now so the flavors can blend overnight, but it's so good already!

I'm absolutely going to try everyone's recipes because they sound so good. I swear I eat hummus for lunch at school every other day I love it that much. Hence the lack of tahini in the house, lol. To me it's funny because before I had LO, hummus was one of those things I'd eat, but could live w/o. Then I got knocked up and couldn't live w/o it. Still can't, I should buy stock in chick peas

There are worse things to be addicted to. Is there really a such thing as to much humus anyway

Re: Tahini-less hummus ideas

you can def use pb...but i love tahini, so i would never do without it.
my recipe is as follows...beware, i LOVE garlic...
using a hand blender and the blender cup...
toss in 3/4 can garbanzo beans without the water
3 T pb or tahini
pinch salt,
1/2 lemon squeezed
pinch black pepper
3-4 cloves garlic
add in about 1/4 c. of garbanzo bean water
blend using hand blender.
add about 1/4 c olive oil
if you like the consistency thick, leave as is...
i like mine a bit more runny so i add water (either tap or garbanzo bean if there is any left) til its consistency i like.

i spread it onto a small tray and drizzle with olive oil, paprika, and 3 garbanzos in the center for presentation. serve with homemade pita chips or pita bread.
