When did your preemie smile?
So Cameron will be 3 months old on the 18th, and his due date is the 21st. When should I expect to see him smile at us?

Re: When did your preemie smile?
June Claire didn't smile until way after we brought her home -- I'd say she was closer to 6 months. IME, you have to use their adjusted age for things like this, but then again every baby is different.

Re: When did your preemie smile?
I can't remember how long after birth it's supposed to happen. So if he's "term" on the 21st, how long after that?

Re: When did your preemie smile?
Gen, my 27-weeker smiled at 5 months. Eli, my 26-weeker at 9 months (he had a brain injury which we didn't know about).
ETA- I believe for term babies is ~4-6 weeks when they smile. My 34-weeker started smiling at 8-weeks, so 2-weeks adjusted but later term preemies usually hit milestones in between their actual and adjusted age. Last edited by katedanzer; 12-12-2010 at 10:35 PM. |

Re: When did your preemie smile?
Maggie is 10 weeks, 4 weeks adjusted, and we have gotten one random smile, and one sleep smile...nothing as far as actually looking at us and grinning. She has begun to turn her head and look at me.

Re: When did your preemie smile?
My 33 weeker started smiling around his due date. I honestly can't remember the first one. At the beginning it's hard to tell what qualifies as a smile. Now he's about 6 weeks adjusted and is smiling A LOT - at least in between crying and sleeping.
BTW - Is Cameron home yet? I've been rooting for you and I haven't seen an update. |

Re: When did your preemie smile?
My 35 weeker smiled at 12 weeks. So adjusted age 7 weeks or so.

Re: When did your preemie smile?
hmm random smiles around 3 months (1 month corrected), and then more frequent "real" smiles at 4 months (2 months corrected)

Re: When did your preemie smile?
I felt like my preemies took a long time to make eye contact even...and then even longer to smile. I can't remember when it was but it was later than full term babies their age.
