Re: any tubie moms out there?
DD has a GJ as well, though we might be going to TPN and just keeping the tube for meds.

Re: any tubie moms out there?
DFS has a G-J after 9 months of G and vomitting 10+ times every day. We got it in July. He also has a catheter bag on the G side constantly draining his stomach fluids.
He's 19 months old and 28 pounds now.

Re: any tubie moms out there?
Kind of piggy-backing here, but I'm curious.
I have a family member who is tube fed and is 7 years old. Is it possible he'll ever eat by mouth? He has no issues with his mouth or anything, I believe it's more psychological now. I know that he used to eat baby food, but many surgeries had him in and out of the hossy, and now he will only lick things.

Re: any tubie moms out there?
We have been tube feeding for 6 years. When he is healthy usually things are on an even keel but we have just started our round of winter illnesses and he has already lost 3lbs from vomiting/illness and I have a ped saying one thing about his weight & the GI saying another. I am getting frustrated with all the he said and she said stuff and am thinking of getting a second opinion.
*knock on wood* We have never had to resort to j-feeds yet but I never know where we are going to end up with his health constantly seesawing back and forth. When he is doing well he does really well but when he is sick it can get serious quickly. melilo - They can learn to eat later in life but even if it is just "behavioral" it still a very difficult and complex process. You can't even begin to imagine all the problems a parent might run into; some of them are medical, some sensory, some are actually about learning. How do you teach a child to swallow that has never swallowed or his muscles have forgotten how? It isn't easy and it doesn't happen overnight and if he has other health issues it is possible that a feeding program may not even take him. Basically it isn't impossible in most cases but it isn't easy by any stretch of the imagination either. |

Quote:
It *really* depends on the kid and what the issues are. Lots of kids wean off their tube, particularly if it's not a physical issue. Some kids have it for life. In the end though, tube feeding isn't that huge of a deal, especially if the child is otherwise healthy. I've met healthy kids who went to college with theirs and it was no big deal. They can feed themselves just fine and have friends that accept them for who they are.

Re: any tubie moms out there?
Glad there are other tubie moms out there! Eli has a GJ tube. We had a G since 2 months old, and it was switched to a GJ a week or so ago. Eli has full GI motility, esophagus, gastric, and intestines. Among tons of other health issues.
