Need advice quick...what would you do?

I have a friend who asked me..."DD doesn't fit in her car seat with her winter coat. Her DD is 33 pounds and 34 inches but is only 2 years old. She wants to know if she can put her in a high back booster seat that uses a regular seat belt. The weight is 30 pounds and 34 inches for that seat.

My personal feeling is that it is not safe...she is only 2. Yes she is a big 2 year old but still. However I don't really know because my DD is 3 years old, 33 inches and 25 pounds and fits into her convertible seat just fine. And could still be rear facing but DH wants her forward.

Please if anyone has advice for her or know what option would be best. My feeling is if she doesn't fit with her winter coat then don't put her in her winter coat while she's in the car. But we live in Wisconsin and it's already 35 degrees F outside and that's cold.

She shouldn't be in her carseat in a coat anyways.

How to use a winter coat with carseats

No 2 year old should ever be in a booster period.

I personally would put the child in a fleece jacket, fasten their harness, and then cover them with either their coat put on backwards or blankets. If you need to convince her of what can happen to a 2 year old in a booster, send her links to Kyle David Miller or Belle's gift. Her child could die if they are in an accident and the child is in a booster.

A child should never be put in a car seat in a bulky coat. The bulk/fluff can compress in an accident and the child could be ejected from the seat.

You are definitely right, she absolutley cannot go into a booster right now, and she can't wear a coat either. Trust me, I understand cold (high today is 27*) but we dont use any puffy coats in the car. It's best to use a good-quality fleece coat or one-piece suit, buckle, and then put a blanket over top

They already said what I was going to: NO to the winter coat.

Besides the winter coat issue, it's also definitely illegal for a 2yo to be in a booster seat, and depending on the laws of the state she's in, it may be illegal for a 3yo to be in a booster seat.

No, I didn't feel safe putting my "baby" into a booster until just recently and he's 4 1/2.

Re: Need advice quick...what would you do?

I can't even convince myself to keep a high back booster in DH's car as an "extra" seat for my 5yr old.

No to the winter coat. But beyond that if her seat really has a 30lbs weight limit she needs a new seat. If you meant that the booster seat has a 30lb minimum still not a good idea.

We live in MI and my kids wear fleece coats in their seats and I keep a fleece blanket for each of them in the backseat for the winter months. They've all made it through the several winters they've been around so far.

Many places, the law is 4 and 40 pounds.

And as well all know, the law is the bare minimum, but is very very very rarely best practice.
