Re: co-worker wants to buy 1 year old TV and DVD player!?!?

I have a DVD in the car, too. Best 1000 bucks I ever spent! We do a lot of very long road trips in the car, and we move every 2-3 years, usually a long distance, so the DVD player is a huge help. I drove from California to Texas by myself last summer with the 3 kids in the car (dh drove his car) and they watched a lot of movies, but they were happy and so was I.

I hate the idea of TVs in the bedrooms, for any age. DH & I don't even have one in our room - one TV in this house wastes plenty of time! DH wants to get another TV for our downstairs guest room, mainly because when my parents come visit, all they want to watch is Fox News at ridiculously high volumes (and they're not hard of hearing...they're just loud!). Anyway, no TVs for our kids. We do have a little portable DVD player that we'll take in the car/plane for longer trips (or like this weekend when 3 neighborhoods, including ours were having garage sales & I didn't want to get them in & out of the car at every house...it was a genius idea, actually.).

I think it is a bad idea from my own perspective. You could um go the underhanded way and talk about the disney lawsuit about their baby einstien videos where they made claims about increasing IQ and stuff and it is completely unfounded and actually may be the opposite and they had to pay money to the parents that bought them when they had the unfounded claims. And then it could be a lead into how tv watching is bad for language aquisition and attention span and AAP states no child under 2 shoudl watch tv (you were just reading it and thought it an interesting tidbit on the internet) but don't make her feel bad for it. She just wants to get her child something as a present.

My mom said she saw a barbie tv/dvd player and wated to get it for Angelica. This was before she was born lol. I told her that we had decided shes not watching tv until shes a few years old but she still wanted to get it. I have kinda relaxed on that, she watches a bit here and there (2 min video on youtube she LOVES "I am a gummybear" lol) but I don't turn on the tv for her to sit in front of and veg out.
I don't see anything wrong with it except there are so many other ideas for a 1 year old.

Re: co-worker wants to buy 1 year old TV and DVD player!?!?

DH and I are constantly arguing about whether or not our boys are gonna have their own TVs in their rooms. I grew up with two TVs in our house--one in the family room and one in my parents' room. I think that is plenty! I don't want everyone going to their own rooms all the time--and besides I want to know what my boys are watching. My MIL bought DS1 a little TV/DVD player for Christmas last year, and I wasn't happy about it. He's only used it on the one long trip we took--I keep it hidden.

I don't get why a 1 year old needs to be watching TV.

We bought a little tv for our oldest DD for her playroom when she was just over 1. We aren't tv junkies, but we do watch tv. I also think it's rude to laugh and joke about what someone plans on getting their child as a present and I would be quite offended if someone did that to me.

I guess we are the opposite...when we travel, I am BIG on makin' them take in the sights and sounds of traveling (all 4 kiddos). But we do have 2 big tv's...biggest in the livin' room and one in our room.

OP, it does seem like a family matter but maybe some suggestions on other options??

Re: co-worker wants to buy 1 year old TV and DVD player!?!?

As a mom of a one year old I don't get it - my son doesn't even watch tv - it may be on to the DIY network (at least its educational) but he rarely even looks at it. He loves the ipod with my husband or his grandma and I have big issues over that but at least they are books, flash cards (those are really cute) or other educational stuff and all he likes are the loud/electronic toys & books.

I honestly don't get buying your 1 year old big/expensive holiday gifts in the first place - that is about you, not them. They don't have a clue or care. But, that's another issue.

Meh, who cares? I will never get why people care what others get for their kids for Christmas.

My kids have TV's. My 1 year old doesnt watch TV, but I dont think that TV is awful. My kids watch about an hour a day, I watch about 3 at night after the kids are in bed.

ADD is genetic. My oldest daughter who never watched TV at all has ADD and my other kids who have TVs are all just fine. I could see an issue if she put the kid in front of a TV, left her alone for days, didnt feed or take care of her, but I doubt that is what she is going to do. TV isnt all evil. My 3 year old loves TV. She has even learned how to speak German and Chinese using a TV.
