"Cool" clothes for a 13 year old girl?

I'm out of touch for what's "in" and "cool" for the pre-teen/teen crowd but I want to be the Aunt that scores a home-run on Christmas for my niece. In years past I've bought her an outfit from Gap and she's loved it. For Mama's with teen girls or who know what they like, is Gap "cool" or is there somewhere else I should look? Justice? Other?

All girls have different styles. I have 2 teen-aged sisters one is 13 and one is 14 and they both have very different styles. I'd never shop in the same store for the both of them. If she liked something from the gap I'd stick with that kind of relaxed simple classic style when looking for similar stores.

what else is she into? I know some 13 year olds who'd love a new twilight hoodie and some who wouldn't touch one with a stick.

Maybe Forever 21? My 8 year old loves Justice, and so do all of the other gradeschool girls. But my guess (and it's just a guess) is that a 13 year old wants to wear what the 18 year olds are wearing, not the 8 year olds, KWIM? Like I said, it's just a guess. From what I know of girls, the more expensive it is, the cooler it is, too.

It depends on the kid. Honestly I would not buy her an outfit. I would get her a gift certificate to a certain mall (not store) or I would take her shopping and tell her to pick something out. Kids tastes change a lot. I don't even buy my daughter anything without her giving me the okay on it. Why buy something that is not going to be worn? kwim?

This. I don't like buying clothes for people generally. I did buy my 12yo brother a DC hoodie because that I know he will love. But aside from that he's getting a gift cert. for Aeropostale. They tend to carry the "latest fashions" and have pretty good prices. I figure for $25 he'll be able to get nearly an entire outfit.

You know her better than me but I have always found clothes to be a winner when it comes to teens if you take their style into consideration. I have one teen girl that I buy a few hoodies from Aero or American Eagle and another who likes Forever 21 type stuff. Teens also loooove gift cards. HTH

My almost 15 year old is into Aeropostal, Hollister, and American Eagle. She couldn't care less about Gap. She loves hoodies from any of the above stores. Maybe a gift card to a nice store would be a good choice!
